If I may suggest, get the best (most) ram and a top end (consumer grade)graphics card. As for screen, use an old screen for gaming. When doing photo edit, use a brand new quality screen. An A/B switch module would come in handy for dual screen switching output perhaps. Processor speed is impt, but its too costly. So get one processor that you can afford after fulfilling ram, graphic cards and monitor.

To me, ram, graphics card and monitor form the most impt part for any decision on DIY.

One badly neglected area is the casing and power supply.... But thats a different topic altgether. A good casing allows sufficient air to be drawn in to cool down vital components. A badly design casing has hot spots and that would simply slow down even the best processor or graphics card there is in the market. But a good casing would not cost anything less than $200.

As for PC, the path for upgrading never seem to end until a new breed of processor influence the entire software and hardware market.

Just my novice input if it meant anything at all. I had long fogotten how to DIY since I used a mac. And if a mac is spoiled, just throw away and buy a new one as the cost of repair hardly justify any major malfunction :)

$1500 can get you a pretty decent setup minus the display.

For a gaming rig, it really depends how hardcore you are. If you are just mild, then $1500 is way over your needs.

Get minimum 2GB RAM (note that WinXP only supports up to 4GB), a good video card and you should be good to go.
