View Full Version : Why do people shoot models?

Some people pay a few hundred for a one-on-one private shoot. Why?
Some people pay less because they gather some buddies but it's still a private shoot. Why?
Some people pay even less, but have to shoot together with a lot of other photographers. Why?
Some people look out for events where models will be appearing to seize the opportunity to shoot them for free.
 Then there are those who solicit contact numbers from models at every opportunity; group shoots, shows, events etc and try to bypass the models' agent. They deprive the models of any protection the agents afford or are obligated to render to the models. However, the question is simply why do they insist on going for models when they are not willing to pay the rate, when we have plenty of requests for TFCDs for free? They can also ask their loved ones, colleagues and friends to stand in as models. So why, oh why?

Maybe we should all ask ourselves first - what's your reason for shooting models?

Portraiture photography is not just about getting compositions and exposures right, but also the choice of the models suitable for the theme etc. Hence, portraiture shooting is not really anyhow get people to shoot. You need the right face to be in your portfolio, otherwise why the need of the word "model"?

Well, the cost of getting a model be it for 1:1, group, or even free as in TFCD, does it really matters? What is most important is to get the pictures you want, isn't it?

My greatest unhappiness about this field is that suddenly got alot of model wannabes and organises/"agencies" coming up...

Love this thread created by AM.

I got a simple answer, because they are girls! Because of the look, body etc.. that attract them (photographers) to go shoot in regardless of pay shoot or free catwalk or celebrity come show face to the long waiting crowds.

Let's see, guys aren't that level yet, right. :p

The answers are really really straight forward.

1 As what Ricky said, people like to take pictures of pretty ladies.

2 And if possible, most people would love to take pictures of supermodels.

3 However, not many are able, or willing to, pay for supermodels (I mean the REAL Supermodels!)

4 So they go for cheaper alternatives.

5 If they can afford it, a great professional model on a one-one basis.

6 Next, sharing a great professional model.

7 Then lower down the economic and affordability scale, joining organised shoots with groups, with various "grades" of models.

8 Next, we have the innovative and creative types who find ways to photograph models in as cheap ways as possible!

9 And of course, even further down the rung, "free type shoots" such as TFCD.

The Q & A from me ;p

Q: Some people pay a few hundred for a one-on-one private shoot. Why?
A: Having a more experienced model for a 1 to 1 shoot makes it 'easier' to shoot the theme you want.

Q: Some people pay less because they gather some buddies but it's still a private shoot. Why?
A: Sharing cost and maybe interested in the same theme.

Q: Some people pay even less, but have to shoot together with a lot of other photographers. Why?
A: Intrested the model, theme or outfits for the shoot

Q: Some people look out for events where models will be appearing to seize the opportunity to shoot them for free.
A: Equipment are expensive, gotta think of budget too ;p. But anyway shooting at events are fun and challenging too, considering how difficult is it to get a so-so image. Runway fashion is another matter all together.

Q:  Then there are those who solicit contact numbers from models at every opportunity; group shoots, shows, events etc and try to bypass the models' agent. They deprive the models of any protection the agents afford or are obligated to render to the models.
A: I don't usually ask for contacts, if you notice. -->> Usually <<-- it is the opposite (and it looks like I'm asking, since both involve copying details ...).

Q: However, the question is simply why do they insist on going for models when they are not willing to pay the rate, when we have plenty of requests for TFCDs for free?
A: Paid shoots -->> usually <<-- have already set the outfits and themes, so if you like it, you join it. For TFCDs, some 'models' do not have the outfits suitable... Not all TFCDs can be relaxed infront of the lens or perform like some experienced models (some = those better ones) to get the images you really want. Since you do TFCDs too, you shd know.

Q: They can also ask their loved ones, colleagues and friends to stand in as models. So why, oh why?
A: Frenz, colleagues may be shy and are more unnatural infront of the lens ... Would you wanna be my TFCD model (I do male TFCDs too ;p)?

Acceptable?

that why i insist on the models bring a friend along when doing private shoot, u will nv know who he/they are once the door are closed.
I have no problem shooting one to one... even in a room with closed door... The model trust me not to do anything funny to her, I trust her not to sabo me...

It's all about mutal trust yah, if the trust is not there, how to shoot?

Well, if in clubs, then maybe things will be alittle different... My namecard will change mode liao... :happy1:

You all think too much.

Just shoot.

Shoot first.

Talk later.
