ok, hope i can find some help here.
my obj is to take snapshots for night, but there is this problem that im facing, i can't expose the background and ppl properly.
was at jurong hill yesterday playing around with night shooot. then decided to take some pics with m wife.
im using a tripod, manual mode, meter-ed the background. which calls for say 20s at f2.8. iso 600. with rear flash,
does it mean that the subject in this case the ppl have to stay put there for the full 20sec? which is crazy to think of it.?
need your advices thanks

meter for background as you have described. then maybe about 5 secs before the shutter closes, ask the subject to move into the frame and pose. if subject is at the side of the frame, off-shoe flash might work better. you can try firing the flash manually.

sorry juz to check as i didnt' know about the trick of getting ppl to come in later juz before the shutter closes.
how does that work technically?
this is really new to me as it would make more sense to frame it first? or is there another way to do it?

well...since it is night, short exposures of a relatively dimly lit subject would probably take a few seconds to register in the frame. so if the subject moves in say 5 secs before the end of exposure, the movement would likely be unnoticeable. when you subsequently fire the flash, that would light up the subject sufficiently to register in the frame. obviously prior to taking the shot, you will need to frame the subject and the background. once that is done the subject can leave the scene until you you need him. for best results, place subject in darker part of the scene.
here is one that i took previously. exposure was 20 secs, f/16, iso 100. flash was manually fired off-cam.

it was also discussed in this forum
The lighting colour for the subject don't mix with the ambient lighting behind. but it is an excellent demonstration
