Any recommendations for a good negative cum photo scanner suitable for placing on a computer table?

DIY home scanning is tedious as it is very slow for negatives. But the biggest problem is removing dust.

Once upon a time, Kodak carries a film cleaning solution which helps remove dust and protect negatives from fungus with its special chemical. But they dont sell them anymore for several years. I think a brand called pit stop or something carries them.

For negatives or slides that are very dirty, do consider cleaning them with the correct agent. The scanning can take hours

As for recommendation, try the V700 or at least the V500. HP makes a very good flatbed model as well, but i have used it before.

Forget about dedicated film scanner (ie minolta, nikon). Reason is there is little use for them apart from scanning slides/negatives. A flatbed can scan pictures, negatives.

v700 is an ideal choice for near professional scans for negatives.

But you may also buy a lower end scanner like v500 or v350 flatbed and scan from a 5R/6R print. That way, you dont have to deal with dust issues. Using ICE software would make the scanning job forever and before you know it, your home PC may hang by morning time. LOL

HP has a few new models that compete head to head to epson. But, do remember, using a flatbed has its limitation when scanning tiny 35mm. If you dont have a lot to scan, suggest u bring to KT and ask them to cut u a deal for hi res digital scanning using their fuji dedicated film scanner. But resolution is only average and u can print up to 6R decently. Depending on original picture quality, printing S8R may be abit stretching as the file size is only 2~ 3mb in jpeg from their high res scan. They dont have it in tiff mode.

For flatbed, be prepared also the file sizes to go 50mb to over 100mb for one slide... If u have 3,000 negatives/slides to work on using epson digital ICE (dust removal feature) and highest scan resolution, may God bless you. Should be done by jan 2009 if you spend 1hr on every weekend. Your PC will also hang due to insufficient memory failure.
