Soon I would need to shoot subjects at least 100M or so away at twilight. My widest aperture for that is only F5.6 and I need 1/800 shutter speed to capture the subjects. Plus I will need to do a lot of trekking in rough terrain and will already be laden with a camera, lens and tripod setup weighing close to 10 kg.
Does anyone know of a suitable portable flash?
I know the Quantum Q flash can reach 200 ft but that's still a little short and I am not sure if it can do "high-speed synch" with my 5D.

My dear!!! Not clear lay! 100m at F5.6 but what ISO??? May i know why you need such a high shutter speed at 1/800? what is your focal length?:confused1:

Forgot to mention two factors governing GN! I'll be shooting wildlife so iso will be 400 to 800 and focal length will be 500-800mm. So to cover all, let's say iso 400 and focal length of 500mm. I need high shutter speed because I may want the subject to almost fill the frame which means every slight movement will be magnified; and I don't want many pics with motion blur.

:) You might need something like a Better Beamer flash extender on a powerful flash like the Metz 45 or 76

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/better_beamer.shtmlThanks. I already have a flash extender and am using it with my 5600HS(D) which has a higher GN than Metz45. What is the 76? Is it a hammer flash? If so, that will be a problem because to avoid the "steel eye" effect I would need to mount it on a flash bracket such as one shown here http://www.kirkphoto.com/brackets.html

Yes, the 76 is a hammer flash unit which means that a bracket will probably be neccessary. The Metz 76 is the flagship of the Metz line using the SCA system for TTL setup. GN is 76 @ ISO 100, so plenty of power. Using the flash extender should just about reach the 100m range. But its probably gonna cost a bomb like the Quantum though:sweat: (But it'd be a lot lighter than lugging a Q-Flash in the backpack in the field)
