There are 4 private kelongs & 1 belong to Johore Sultan around Sibu Island, so which one you are going? If you are going on 30 Aug Saturday to 1 Sep Monday, I doubt you can do a shoot on the kelong as it is very packed. Shoot on Sibu Island on 2nd day quite ok.
If you want to own the kelong for a wonderful shoot & fishing I suggest you go on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday.
Sibu Island kelong is my favourite spot.
A best place for relax cos no handphone receiving signal & kelong has a wide range of beer in stock
 Stanely must go :cheers:Stanely can drink

Dun use nylon leader, use only threaded line so your big fish cannot escape.
This area has baracuda, dophlin fish & etc.
Bring 1 rod for sotong fishing in the night.
One important reminder: "Bring extra MYR to buy the ready stock of beer from the kelong operator".

You can on yourself by driving there.
Cross the Causeway & drive to Kota Tinggi Road - past Johore Jaya, Kota Tinngi Town, Sedili. From Sedili be more observant, when you see the road sign showing "To Taman Leman Jetty" turn right into the oil palm plantation. Keep driving until you reach the jetty. The carpark at jetty is very safe, new car park there no body steal.

really ar? tat time i email them to ask abt is dec a good time to go tey nber tell me monsoon =( Trust me. I have done more than 100 scuba dives in that locality since mid-80s. Of course, even in the midst of a storm you can get calm seas in its "eye" but you have to know how to locate it and be real lucky. Once, I had to sail to Horsburgh lighthouse in November as we were assigned to escort some local VIPs there. All the way, with waves overlapping the boat, it was more like riding in a submarine. However, when we arrived, the sea was calm as a lake inside the coral reef ringing the island. So if you enjoy braving rough seas with 8 ft high waves, dark skies and torrential rain, then go ahead and challenge nature. Just take note - seafarers have a saying "Water has no compassion".

:cheer::cheer::cheer: In Hawaiin, mahi-mahi is swordfish. Is it the same? .Tt is pelagic and the kelong would have to be very far out to have such in the vicinity. The only times I have seen swordfish are at Buffalo Rock and Horsberg which are in International waters.
Hello Lone Wolf, do you fish? Definitely not. Whilst I have hunted and killed game before, I have never killed, harm or molested an animal unnecessarily and do not want to start again. I surrendered my spearguns and the licences to the police more than twenty years ago. Now, I leave nature alone but have no objections to hunting for food but definitely not for fun i.e. take only what one can eat there and then that day. I know sport fishermen release the fishes after catching them but it still interferes with the natural cycle. All animals in nature need to be able to forage, hunt and reproduce unmolested to propagate their species. Any interference to their normal activities, endangers their survival. So if it is going to be purely a fishing trip for 3 days, it would bore me to death.
I still prefer TS's programme. Isn't the kelong you plan to go to the same one?
Jukon

Mahi-mahi and swordfish are different type of fish, but both are good fight fish. Mahi-mahi are usually green and yellow in colour, the males are more colourful and bigger than the females. They live in group. The swordfish live in group when young, as they grow bigger their group become smaller.
The fishes are swimming so they can be anywhere. The smaller fish like selar, kembong, taban, take shelter and feed at the kelong for food. They are followed by bigger fish such as sea bass, grouper, MJ and etc. Then tuna and mahi-mahi come in again follow by bigger fish. So it depend on your luck and skill. Please don't say kelong has no big fish.

In fact, the mahi-mahi is prey for the swordfish and I was referring to the swordfish as being an oceanic species when I called it pelagic. However, I feel you have a simplistic view of how the food-chain heirachy works. The reason why we do not see pelagic specis near the shore is that they have enough prey in deep waters and only those lower down the food chain will venture coastal i.e. the hunting grounds are spread out. Big is relative. The tuna I encountered in Malaysia and as far out as Pulau Aur is seldom over 2 feet in length. However, diving the Similan Islands in the Andaman sea I have seen 6 ft tunas but the depth there was 400-600 feet. Now that classifies for my defination of big. I doubt you can build a kelong in water that deep. However, whales have been known to beach so if you say there are big fishes like swordfish in your kelong, I'll not argue that claim but take it with a pinch of salt until I see it.
Is this the mahi-mahi you are referring to?

I only go East coast of Malaysia for fishing so the fish caught is not big. The water is over fished.
From Sibu Kelong, I caught the biggest fish is a 4.3kg Barramundi locally known as sea bass. I still prefer fish below 1.5kg like Parrot Fish, red snapper and red grouper.
From Pulau Pemanggil I got bigger fish, the biggest being a 8.0kg tenggiri.

I understand what you wrote about marine life being depleted and I think it is mostly due to dynamite fishing which kills everything within range including coral which well-being are essential for the survival of reef fishes. It is probably more acute nearer shore where it is more effectively used. Further out or in deeper waters, there are still pockets of water teeming with marine life including sharks, barracuda, rays, turtles, lobster, giant clams etc including your favourite parrot fish and bigger Napolean Wrasse. At the right time, you can even see migration of hammerhead sharks or whale sharks.

Since I have no interest in harassing fishes or as you call it "fishing", I won't be organising it as I wouldn't be joining if the only activity is fishing. Maybe you should do it.
However, if you are interested in going to a resort on Pulau Sibu instead so that there is a choice between kelong fishing, scuba-diving, nature treks etc side trips, count me it. Even without scuba kaki, I can skin-dive or ramble in the bush and shoot photos alone. As nature-lovers say "leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but images.

However, I would be most interested in trying to catch the hammerhead sharks migration here but this is more for season divers who will be comfortable with 8-10 ft hammerhead sharks all around them

The package for Pulau Sibu Resort or Kelong is free and easy. You can do whatever you like beside fishing.

Charter the boat they will bring you to the locations where you can conduct your activities be it model shoot, diving or anything else at your pace and leisure.
You are not confined to a kelong, the kelong is just your base camp.

You are not confined to a kelong, the kelong is just your base camp. Huh? You are insisting I stay in a small building at sea without facilities and then charter a boat to take me to places where I can conduct the activities I like? :confused1: What's wrong with my going directly to the resort with all these within reach and save the money to charter a boat for a nice bottle of champagne or a souveniour? You want to plant yourself at the "kelong", which is not even authentic, just so you can disrupt fishes in their survival activities for 3 solid days non-stop and couldn't care less whatever exists in the vicinity but no-one else has to rough it just for you. I can rough it in the jungle and mountains as well if not better than the average man when the need arises but there's no way you can convince me to join you in acts against nature's creatures.
As for a base-camp, here's what I normally use nowadays:

There's plenty of choices on food and drink and things to do without even leaving it. Even that wasn't enough for milady and I had to get a stateroom with a balcony for some private space outdoors. Sometimes, it feels a pity to leave it for onshore excursions at the different ports of call.
It seems we belong to different worlds. So I will leave you to organise your way for other people with your interest and do my thing, seperately, my way.

Look, I know you want to plant yourself at the "kelong", which is not even authentic, just so you can disrupt fishes in their survival activities for 3 solid days non-stop and couldn't care less whatever exists in the vicinity but no-one else has to rough it just for you. I can rough it in the jungle and mountains as well if not better than the average man when the need arises but I already have too much blood on my hands to atone for to join you now in acts against nature's creatures.

Firstly, a kelong is not a small building at sea without facilities. Secondly, even you go resort you still need to charter a boat to bring you to the fish spot be you a angler, diver or underwater protographer.
The sea is very big, my resource is limited, how can I disrupt fishes in their survival activities? After I completed my 3 years Buddhist Dharma Course I catch no fish. I might be doing mediation and still life photography in the 3 days stay.
You are very right to say "we belong to different worlds." To maintenance the amicable mood we should stop here.
