The Pentax K20D is a 14.6 Megapixel mid-range DSLR which packs-in a broad range of features. It inherits an impressive core specification from its predecessor, the K10D, including a dust and weather-resistant body, built-in Shake Reduction, a decent optical viewfinder, a number of innovative exposure modes, a wealth of custom options, and the option of recording RAW in Adobe's DNG format. To this Pentax has increased the screen to 2.7in, boosted the sensitivity to 6400 ISO, added Live View, an X-Sync port, and improved the optional DA 18-55mm kit lens, along with that big jump in sensor resolution. The big question is how it measures-up to today's other 14 Megapixel DSLR, the Sony A350, not to mention Canon's EOS 450D / XSi and the semi-pro EOS 40D. To find out how the new Pentax compares, check out our Pentax K20D review, and as always for a demonstration of its highlights, see our K20D video tour.

The Olympus E-420 is an unusually small and light 10 Megapixel DSLR aimed at point and shoot owners looking to upgrade, along with enthusiasts who want a camera they can use in situations where a traditional DSLR would be too cumbersome. It shares virtually the same design as its predecessor, the E-410, which makes it the World's smallest and lightest DSLR. New to the E-420 are enhanced Live View facilities with contrast-based AF, face detection and an 11-point AF system. The screen's also slightly bigger, there's a stack of customisation, support for wireless flash, shadow adjustment technology, a larger grip and an improved sensor. Coupled with the new slim pancake lens, the E-420 makes for an extremely compact DSLR, but does it compromise comfort, quality or usability? Find out in our Olympus E-420 review where we'll test it with the new 25mm lens, and as always for a demonstration of its highlights, see our E-420 video tour

The Panasonic DMC-FX500 is the flagship of the Lumix compact range. It features 10.1 Megapixel resolution, a 3in touch-sensitive screen and a 5x optical zoom with impressively wide angle facilities which are equivalent to 25mm. It's the first model from Panasonic to feature a touch-sensitive screen, and making the most of it are full manual controls. The FX500 also sports High Definition video recording in the 720p format and has an optional component output for HDTVs. It's a compelling feature-set, but several key aspects are shared by Panasonic's already popular FX35 and TZ5. So does the new FX500 deserve the title of the flagship Lumix compact? Find out in our Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX500 review, and for a demonstration of its features, see our FX500 video tour. Note the FX500 is known as the FX520 in Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

The Pentax K200D is a 10 Megapixel budget DSLR with a big difference: with no fewer than 60 seals against the elements, its boasts an unprecedented degree of weatherproofing for its price. The body also features built-in Shake Reduction which works with any lens you attach. The K200D additionally sports an upper LCD screen, support for Adobe's DNG RAW format, along with optional in-camera RAW processing and even a dedicated RAW button. It's an impressive array of features, many inherited from the former flagship K10D, although there's no Live View. So the big question is whether traditional aspects and tough build quality can outweigh modern gadgetry. Find out it measures-up against rivals in our Pentax K200D review and to see a demonstration of its highlights, check out our Pentax K200D video tour.

The Olympus Zuiko Digital 25mm is the smallest and lightest lens available for DSLRs based on the Four Thirds standard. Weighing 95g and measuring just 23.5mm thick, it justifies the pancake nickname, and transforms smaller Four Thirds bodies into working kits which could squeeze into larger coat pockets. With 50mm equivalent coverage and an f2.8 aperture, the lens is ideal for general-purpose use, but do its compact dimensions compromise quality or performance? Find out in our Olympus Zuiko Digital 25mm pancake lens review where we'll compare it against other Olympus zooms and the specialist 50mm macro lens. Nikon's D700 is the company's second full-frame DSLR, and comes in at a much more affordable price point than the flagship D3. The new D700 takes the D3's 12.1 Megapixel FX format sensor, 3in VGA monitor, 51 point AF system and Live View, but squeezes it into a smaller and lighter D300-sized body equipped with a popup flash and anti-dust features. The Olympus E-520 is the successor to one of the best-selling DSLRs of last year, the popular E-510. The new E-520 takes the 10 Megapixel resolution, Live View, built-in stabilisation, and effective anti-dust features of its predecessor and adds new contrast-based AF in Live View with Face Detection, a bigger screen, quicker continuous shooting, support for wireless flash control, an extra IS mode for panning with the camera held of its side, and a new optional underwater housing. The Sigma DP1 is one of the most unique and highly anticipated compact digital cameras on the market. It's the World's first compact to house a full-sized DSLR sensor, which should allow it to avoid the noise artefacts which plague modern compacts. It also shuns zoom lenses in favour of a fixed focal length model with an equivalent wide-angle coverage of 28mm. On top of this you get full manual control over exposure, manual focusing capabilities and unusually for a camera with a DSLR sensor, a movie mode. Joby's Gorillapod SLR Zoom is designed for those who want the stability of a tripod, without the inconvenience of lugging one around. Like earlier Gorillapods, flexible jointed legs allow you to securely grab onto almost any object or surface from curved railings to tree branches. Once locked into place you can then comfortably take long or multiple exposures, along with self-timer shots. The big difference with the SLR Zoom Gorillapod is it can support weights up to 3kg, thereby accommodating semi-pro DSLRs, while remaining light and portable. Is it the perfect tripod for you? Today Nikon announced the D60, a new budget DSLR which bears an uncanny resemblance to what we expect to become the discontinued D40x. It shares the same 10 Megapixel sensor, same 2.5in screen and essentially the same body and controls. New to the D60 are a stop-motion recording mode, eye sensors which switch the screen off when you're looking through the viewfinder, Active D-Lighting, and an anti-dust system which both vibrates the sensor unit along with using an airflow system to channel particles from the image path. Overall though, it's a minor refresh of an existing model, and as such a disappointment especially without a built-in AF motor for non-AF-S lenses. Those hoping to see a D80 successor will have to keep their fingers crossed Nikon's holding something back for PMA. The D60 is expected in February, costing 529 GBP / 791 EUR with the recently-announced stabilised DX 18-55mm VR kit lens. See the complete Nikon DSLR range.

The Alpha A350 is the top model in Sony's latest triplet of DSLRs. It takes A200's body with built-in stabilisation, swaps the 10.2 Megapixel sensor for one with 14.2 Megapixels, equips it with Live View and hinges the 2.7in screen so it can tilt up or down for easier framing at high or low angles. The Live View also employs a secondary sensor in the viewfinder, which means the normal AF system can work as quickly as normal and there's none of the usual noises or delay. On paper, the A350 looks like being one of the most important DSLRs of 2008, but does it live up to its expectations in practice? The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX35 is a slim 10.1 Megapixel compact with a 4x optical zoom lens. It's the successor to the Lumix FX33 which was announced only six months ago - so what's new? The Alpha A300 is the middle DSLR in Sony's consumer range. It takes A200's body, 10.2 Megapixel sensor and built-in stabilisation, and equips it with Live View and a screen which tilts for easier framing at high or low angles. It's a compelling package, but the big question is how it compares against the higher-end Alpha A350 - an identical model, other than its higher resolution 14.2 Megapixel sensor. Does the A350 record measurably greater detail, or does the A300 enjoy lower noise levels? Find out in our Sony Alpha DSLR-A350 review where we'll reveal direct comparisons between both Alphas along with Canon's EOS 450D / XSi. And as always, you can check out the highlights in our A300 video tour.

Today Olympus announced its latest DSLR, the E-520. Successor to the E-510, the new E-520 builds on what was already a feature-packed DSLR. The core specifications of a 10 Megapixel sensor with built-in stabilisation, Live View and effective anti-dust features remain, but the E-520 now features a slightly bigger 2.7in screen, quicker 3.5fps continuous shooting, a new IS mode and the addition of contrast-based AF facilities complete with Face Detection. Also announced is the new Zuiko Digital ED 9-18mm 1:4.0-5.6 lens which delivers extreme wide angle coverage equivalent from 18-36mm. The Olympus E-520 will be available from June 2008, costing 479 GBP body alone, 529 GBP with the 14-42mm or 629 GBP with both the 14-42mm and 40-150mm kit lenses. The Zuiko Digital 9-18mm will go on sale in September 2008, but no pricing is available yet. Check out our Olympus E-520 preview to see how it measures-up against its rivals.

Nikon this week announced the COOLPIX P6000, the new flagship model in the COOLPIX line of compact digital cameras. I've long wanted a good small camera that can shoot RAW and allows full metering control. It's been a long time since the days of the COOLPIX 5700, 8800 and others that supported RAW. But is the P6000 a worthy successor?....

The D700 is Nikon's second full-frame DSLR, taking the 12.1 Megapixel 'FX' sensor from the flagship D3 and squeezing it into a D300-sized body. This allows the D700 to share the same excellent high ISO performance as the D3 in a smaller, lighter and more affordable form factor. The D700 also features a 51-point AF system, high resolution 3in VGA monitor with Live View, an HDMI port for connection to HDTVs and superb build-quality with resistance to dust and moisture. It's one of the most feature-packed DSLRs to date, but with so many features matching the D300, the big question is how the quality compares - and whether it's worth spending the extra for the full-frame sensor. Find out in our Nikon D700 full review where you'll see it directly compared against the D300 and Canon's EOS 5D. And as always, you can see the highlights in our Nikon D700 video tour.

Canon's EOS 1000D, or Rebel XS as it's known in North America, is the company's latest entry-level DSLR, and successor to the best-selling EOS 400D / Rebel XTi. The new 1000D / XS shares the same 10 Megapixel CMOS sensor as its predecessor and also the same sized 2.5in screen, but now adds Live View and comes bundled with an Image Stabilised kit lens. Interestingly some specifications have actually been downgraded a little: the AF system now has 7-points to the 400D / XTi's 9-points, and the 3fps continuous shooting rate now only applies to JPEG files. But the core specification of 10 Megapixels, Live View and a lens with anti-shake at an affordable price will greatly appeal to anyone in the market for a budget DSLR. Find out how Canon's latest DSLR compares against others in the range and key rivals in our EOS 1000D / XS review, and as always you can see the highlights in our EOS 1000D / XS video tour.

Today sees Nikon announce the long-awaited successor to its popular D80 Digital SLR. The new D90 follows a similar strategy to its predecessor, aimed at a slightly higher level than many of its rivals. The resolution has been increased to 12.3 Megapixels, the maximum sensitivity to 6400 ISO, and the screen enlarged to a 3in model with VGA resolution. Unsurprisingly the D90 offers Live View facilities, but the big new feature, and a first for any DSLR at the time of writing are video recording capabilities. The D90 can record in a variety of formats including 1280x720 pixel HD and is also fitted with an HDMI port for connection to HDTVs. There's even more features including an optional GPS accessory, so to find out more about what looks set to be one of the most exciting DSLR launches of 2008, check out our Nikon D90 preview.

Today Canon announced the EOS 50D Digital SLR, which complements the EOS 40D rather than replacing it. The EOS 50D greatly resembles the EOS 40D from the outside, but features a new 15.1 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor backed-up by the newly developed DiG!C 4 processor. In reaction to Nikon's D300, the sensitivity has been boosted to 3200 ISO with extended 6400 and 12800 ISO modes, the screen resolution improved to VGA / 920k dots, and an HDMI port fitted for HD slideshows; Live View now also includes contrast-based AF and face detection options. Continuous shooting is only a fraction slower than the 40D at 6.3fps, and Canon has finally launched an EF-S 18-200mm IS lens to go with it which will also please owners of existing APS-C Canon DSLRs. The 50D is due in September, but where's the long-awaited EOS 5D replacement? Discuss this news in the Cameralabs forum and look out for a preview coming soon.

Today Canon made the EOS 5D Mark II official. The successor to the first 'affordable' full-frame DSLR now features a considerable boost in resolution from 12.8 to 21.1 Megapixels. This matches Canon's current flagship EOS 1Ds Mark III, but it's a brand new sensor which Canon claims delivers its best quality yet. The sensor supports 14-bit files, continuous shooting at 3.9fps and extended sensitivity up to 25,600 ISO. The viewfinder's been improved to 98% coverage, there's a 3in VGA screen, the 9-point AF system is complemented by 6 assist points, and there's even HD movie recording with sound at 1920x1080 pixels, all for an expected body-only price of $2699 USD. Canon's EOS 50D is the company's latest semi-pro DSLR. Three years have passed since the 5D's launch so it's not surprising to find the Mark II featuring a wealth of upgrades including 21.1 Megapixel resolution, a maximum sensitivity of 25,600 ISO, faster 3.9fps continuous shooting, a larger and more detailed 3in VGA screen with Live View, a viewfinder with broader 98% coverage, anti-dust facilities, an HDMI port, support for UDMA cards and much more besides. It represents a big upgrade, and that's before you even consider the Mark II's 1080p movie recording facilities, but unlike its predecessor, there's already two full-frame rivals on sale from Sony and Nikon. Find out how Canon's latest measures-up in our 5D Mark II full review, along with a detailed look at its movie mode, and of course a look into the already infamous black dot issue. Our video tour will follow.

The Olympus [mju] 1050 SW or Stylus 1050 SW as it's known in North America, is a 10.1 Megapixel compact with a 3x optical zoom and a body that's shockproof to 1.5m, freeze-proof to minus 10 degrees Celsius and waterproof to depths of 3m. This makes it perfect for capturing the fun in a pool or snorkelling reefs on holiday, but it's equally suitable for snapping while kayaking, jet-skiing, sailing, hunting, fishing, camping or hiking in heavy rain. It's enormously liberating to take photos without worrying about splashes, but is the quality any good? Find out in our Olympus 1050 SW review where we'll pitch it against underwater rival Pentax, and the best of the terrestrial compacts.

The Nikkor DX 18-55mm VR is the company's latest budget kit lens, designed for use with its entry-level DSLRs. It's the standard bundle with the D60 but also available separately for anyone who wants an affordable stabilised lens for their Nikon DX-format body. The DX 18-55mm VR delivers the same 27-83mm equivalent range as its predecessor, the DX 18-55mm II, and also shares the same f3.5-5.6 focal ratio, but the big new feature is the inclusion of Vibration Reduction to counteract camera-shake. Find out how this budget kit lens compares to other general-purpose zooms in our Nikkor DX 18-55mm VR review and see its highlights in our video tour.

The Nikkor AF-S 50mm f/1.4G is the company's new flagship standard prime lens. It shares the same bright f1.4 aperture and focal length as the much older AF 50mm f/1.4D, but features an SWM focusing motor, which allows it to autofocus on all Nikon DSLRs, including the D40, D40x and D60. It's compatible with full-frame models, on which it'll deliver standard coverage. Mounted on a DX format body it delivers an equivalent of 75mm, which is perfect for portraits. In this review diary, Cameralabs' forum moderator Thomas tests the Nikkor AF-S 50mm f/1.4G lens on his Nikon D300 body.

Canon's PowerShot SX1 IS is one of the most exciting super-zoom cameras on the market today. It takes the already popular SX10 IS with its 20x zoom, but swaps the traditional CCD sensor for a new CMOS version which allows much faster continuous shooting at 4fps and HD movie recording in the 1080p format. Both the viewfinder and rear flip-out screen have been swapped for 16:9 widescreen versions and Canon's also added an HDMI port. One of the big questions though is whether the switch to CMOS has improved or compromised the image quality. So ahead of our upcoming final report, here's a preview of our Canon PowerShot SX1 IS High ISO Noise page, directly comparing it against the SX10 IS and the 450D / XSi DSLR. Panasonic's Lumix DMC-G1 is the first camera based on the Micro Four Thirds standard, which targets those who want the quality and flexibility of a large sensor and interchangeable lenses, but have been put off by the size of DSLRs and their perception of difficult operation. By dispensing with the reflex mirror and optical viewfinder, the Lumix G1 is certainly smaller and lighter than most DSLRs, while a wealth of technologies inherited from compacts ensures easy operation. Panasonic's Lumix DMC-TZ7 (or ZS3 as it's known in North America) is the successor to one of the best selling compacts of last year. It features 10.1 Megapixel resolution, a detailed 3in screen, HD video recording and a 12x optically-stabilised zoom packed into a pocket-sized body. The new lens is both wider and longer than its predecessor, boasting an equivalent range of 25-300mm. The HD video may remain 720p in format, but you now get the choice of encoding it in Motion JEPG for easier editing, or AVCHD for longer recording times. You also get an HDMI port and Face Recognition which can actually remember a handful of people and give them focus priority. In his book, '50 Lighting Setups For Portrait Photographers', author Steven H Begleiter highlights the techniques behind a wide variety of portraits, set across a series of double-page spreads. Common questions such as how to downplay a double chin and dark shadows under the eyes or how to produce a soft, romantic feel are also discussed. Canon's PowerShot SX1 IS is one of the most compelling hybrid cameras to date, combining decent stills and Full HD video recording in a compact package that also includes a 20x zoom, flip-out screen and 4fps continuous shooting. About the only thing it didn't offer upon first release was RAW recording, and Canon recently fixed that with a firmware update. Panasonic's Lumix GH1 is the second Micro Four Thirds model, and externally almost identical to its stable-mate, the Lumix G1. Both cameras pack 12 Megapixels, detailed flip-out screens and full-time Live View into relatively compact bodies. The big difference is the GH1 now sports Full HD video recording thanks to a new sensor, but has this capability compromised noise levels? Find out in our Lumix GH1 High ISO Noise preview where we directly compare its image quality against two very different leaders in their fields: the Nikon D90 and Canon PowerShot SX1 IS. An increasing number of DSLRs and compacts boast HD Movie recording, and many of them deliver pretty respectable results. But how do they really compare side-by-side? To find out we shot the same sequence moments apart with four cameras, each one quite different from the others, but all having one thing in common: the ability to record 1080p video at a smooth frame rate. We wanted to see how they performed under typical conditions, so filmed the sequences handheld in their auto modes with stabilisation enabled and a zoom of the lens at the end. It's an informal comparison, but still reveals some interesting aspects about each camera. So to find out how the Panasonic GH1, Canon 5D Mark II, PowerShot SX1 IS and Sony HX1’s HD movies measure-up, check out our HD shoot-out!

Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-HX1 is the company's latest super-zoom, featuring 9 Megapixels, a tilting 3in screen and a 20x optical range. It's also only the second-ever non-DSLR to feature a CMOS sensor, which allows the HX1 to boast HD video and fast continuous shooting. If you thought the Canon SX1 IS was quick at 4fps though, think again: the Sony HX1 boasts nothing less than 10fps. The HX1 also offers cunning modes including one which assembles a panoramic image from a single sweep of the camera. It's another gadget-packed camera from Sony, but can it live up to its promise? To put it in context, we've compared the D3x against what arch rival Canon describes as its DSLR with the best image quality to date: the EOS 5D Mark II. Despite the tiny dimensions, Canon's managed to squeeze both a 2.5in screen and an optical viewfinder into the camera, the latter allowing you to greatly extend the battery life. Slightly smaller than a pack of cards, the IXUS 95 IS / SD1200 IS is certainly very pocketable, but can it deliver the goods in practice? Find out whether this is the ideal budget camera for the holidays in our Canon IXUS 95 IS / PowerShot SD1200 IS review.

Canon's PowerShot G11 is the latest in the company's flagship G-series, designed to satisfy demanding photographers who want a powerful compact or a pocketable backup to a DSLR. The latest G11 reduces its resolution for the first time in an attempt to deliver lower noise levels than its predecessor and features a new Low Light mode with a maximum sensitivity of 12,800 ISO. Canon's also equipped the G11 with a fully-articulated screen. In our full review we've tested all the new features along with paying particular attention to the low light capabilities of the G11, especially compared to other top-end compacts. In the GF1's favour are a more detailed screen, faster AF, longer HD recording times and a built-in flash. Canon's PowerShot S90 is a powerful compact designed for enthusiasts who want a pocketable camera without compromising on control and features. The S90 may look like a Digital IXUS / ELPH from the outside, but packs-in full manual control, a 3.8x zoom with wide angle coverage, a large and detailed 3in / 460k screen and support for RAW files, along with putting some effort into decent low light performance with a sensible resolution and bright f2.0 focal ratio. As promised earlier this week, our reviews of the Manfrotto 190XPROB and 190CXPRO3 tripods are now ready to go! The 190XPROB is one of the best-selling tripods around, delivering an unbeatable combination of price and performance – it's one of the best options if you want a decent tripod but don't want to spend a fortune. Alternatively if you're after a lighter version and have a bigger budget, consider the carbon fiber 190CXPRO3 version. In our reviews we'll compare their build, features and stability, along with seeing how their larger 055 counterparts measure-up. See our Manfrotto 190XPROB and 190CXPRO3 reviews for full details!

Canon's IXUS 105 / PowerShot SD1300 IS is the successor to the best-selling IXUS 95 IS / SD1200 IS. The new model features a boost in resolution and screen size, but the big new upgrade is a switch from the basic 3x range of its predecessor to a broader 4x, complete with wide-angle coverage. Canon's latest compact certainly ticks the right boxes, but for around two thirds the price you could alternatively buy Nikon's COOLPIX S3000 or Sony's Cyber-shot W310 which share very similar specs. We've compared all three side-by-side, so if you're shopping for a classy but affordable compact, check out our Canon IXUS 105 / SD1300 IS review!

The PowerShot SD1400 IS / IXUS 130 is an ultra-slim and very stylish 14 Megapixel compact. Successor to the popular SD780 IS / IXUS 100 IS, the new model becomes the slimmest model in Canon's current range at just 17.8mm thick, which combined with rounded corners allows it to slip discreetly and comfortably into any pocket. Canon's kept the 720p HD movies and HDMI output of its predecessor, but broadened the zoom range to 4x with true wide-angle coverage and enlarged the screen to 2.7in. One of 2009's most desirable compacts has just got better, but there's tough competition from Sony. See how they compare in our Canon SD1400 IS / IXUS 130 review.

Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-W350 is an ultra-compact point-and-shoot camera with 14 Megapixels, a 4x zoom with wide coverage and 720p HD movies. At just 16.7mm thick and weighing only 117g with battery and card, this is a seriously small camera you'd be happy to take everywhere. The W350 also features a foolproof Auto mode with scene detection and Sony's excellent Sweep Panorama which automatically stitches multiple images into spectacular wide photos. Best of all, Sony's hit an affordable price point considering the specification, but it's up against Canon's classy IXUS 130 / SD1400 IS. See how they compare in our Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W350 review.

Nikon's COOLPIX S3000 is an affordable compact camera which offers a step-up from the real bargain-basement models. You get 12 Megapixels, a 2.7in screen and a 4x optical zoom which usefully includes wide-angle coverage. It's designed as a point-and-shoot camera with capable automatic operation and the minimum of manual fuss, but is up against two key rivals in the form of Canon's IXUS 105 / SD1300 IS and Sony's Cyber-shot W310. The Nikkor DX 35mm f/1.8G is a prime lens designed for Nikon's DX format DSLRs. Mounted on a DX body, it delivers standard coverage, avoiding the distortion of wide angle lenses and the flattened perspective of telephoto models. The DX 35mm f/1.8G is a great complement to an existing kit zoom, boasting sharper images and much greater light-gathering power. It's also small, light and best of all, very affordable. The Nikkor DX 18-200mm VR II is an 11.1x super-zoom lens designed for Nikon's range of DX format DSLRs. It's the update to one of the most popular lenses for the Nikon system and is now better-equipped to deal with the problem of zoom-creep. As before though, the key selling point is a 27-300mm equivalent range taking you from wide-angle to serious telephoto without the inconvenience of swapping lenses. Nikon's D7000 is the company's latest mid-range DSLR, successor to the best-selling D90 and packed to the brim with features which wouldn't be out of place on a semi-pro model. It sports 16.2 Megapixels and a viewfinder with 100% coverage, tracks action with its new 39-point AF system, shoots at 6fps, and captures 1080p video with continuous autofocusing. It's one of the most exciting DSLRs of 2010, so we've got something a bit special for you: our first video demonstration in almost a year, and our most in-depth yet at just under an hour across four parts! It's a new approach to our review style, but still complemented by our usual detailed results pages, comparisons, sample images and in-depth verdict. Nikon's COOLPIX S80 is an ultra-slim 14 Megapixel compact with an impressive touch-sensitive display. Unlike many touch-screen cameras which compromise on screen size or resolution, the COOLPIX S80 boasts a large 3.5in display with 920k pixels and OLED technology. Complementing this is a 5x optical zoom lens and sliding front cover packed into a slim and stylish body. It's undoubtedly a desirable touch-screen camera in terms of specifications, but how does it perform in practice - particularly against the likes of Sony and Panasonic? Sony's Alpha A580 is a 16 Megapixel DSLR featuring 1080i Full HD video and fast continuous shooting at up to 7fps. Its launch may have been over-shadowed by the translucent-mirrored A33 and A55, but the A580, and its lower resolution counterpart the A560, offer a powerful specification in a more traditional form. Along with Full HD video and fast shooting, the A580 boasts in-camera HDR, 3D panoramas and multi-frame noise reduction. Ahead of our full test report, we can reveal our High ISO Noise comparison against Nikon's D7000, a selection of HD video samples and a look at how effective the multi-frame noise reduction is in practice. Happy New Year everyone! Our first review of 2011 is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX700, a 14 Megapixel compact with a 5x optical zoom lens and 3in touch-screen display. Unlike most compacts, the sensor employs CMOS technology, which allows the FX700 to capture Full HD video, along with offering fast continuous shooting at up to 10fps. It's an impressive specification, but up against the equally quick Sony Cyber-shot TX9 and Nikon's stylish COOLPIX S80. We've compared all three touch-screen models in our Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX700 review!

Nikon's COOLPIX P100 is the company's flagship super-zoom camera, sporting a 26x optical range. The 10 Megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor supports 1080p Full HD video and a variety of quick burst modes including one which shoots full resolution images at up to 10fps. There's also a tilting 3in / 460k screen and the choice of automatic or fully manual exposure control. It's an impressive package for a relatively low price, but up against Panasonic's eternally-popular FZ45 / FZ40 and the massive 35x zoom of Canon's PowerShot SX30 IS. We've compared the performance and quality of all three, so if you're shopping for a super-zoom camera, check out our Nikon COOLPIX P100 review!

The vast majority of new DSLRs and compact cameras capture great-looking HD video, but while clips playback smoothly on the cameras themselves, they can prove tricky to edit on your PC. The problem is modern HD video tends to employ complex compression which is hard to decode in realtime for editing. Traditionally the solution to sluggish PC performance was to upgrade the hardware, but in this article we'll explain why having the right software can make a much bigger impact. We've gone from frustratingly slow editing to a smooth workflow without upgrading the CPU, RAM, disk or graphics. Find out why the right software is the key in our HD DSLR Video Editing guide!

Panasonic's Lumix DMC-TZ20 (or ZS10 as it's known in North America) is the latest model in its enormously popular travel zoom series. The new camera may physically resemble last year's TZ10 / ZS7, but now features a broader 16x optical zoom range, a touch-screen display, higher resolution movie recording at 1080i, and enhanced GPS capabilities with many more landmarks stored in its database. There's also an inevitable boost in resolution, although coupled with different sensor technology, it does at least now allow faster continuous shooting. Find out more about what's set to be one of 2011's best-sellers in our Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ20 / ZS10 preview!

Panasonic's Lumix DMC-GH2 is a hybrid camera designed to capture quality photos and HD video. Its predecessor, the Lumix GH1, raised the bar for video capture which the new GH2 enhances further, while also enjoying higher resolution stills, quicker AF, faster continuous shooting and a touch-screen display. The latter is used to particularly good effect in the movie mode where you can tap to refocus on different subjects as you film, putting the struggling video AF options of traditional DSLRs to shame. The GH2 isn't alone in delivering a compelling hybrid experience though. Find out how it compares against Sony's innovative SLT bodies and check out no fewer than 12 video samples in our Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2 review!

The E-PL2 takes the existing E-PL1 with its 12 Megapixel sensor, popup flash and built-in stabilisation, then upgrades the screen, adds a rear control dial, a new battery and compatibility with a number of new accessories; it also comes with an updated kit lens. Panasonic's Lumix DMC-TZ18 / ZS8, is the simpler and more affordable version of the Lumix DMC-TZ20 / ZS10 pocket super-zoom. It shares the same 16x optical zoom, the same 14.1 Megapixel resolution and the same degree of auto and manual control, all packed into much the same body. Canon's PowerShot A1200 is a 12.1 Megapixel budget camera with a 4x zoom. It's the second cheapest model in Canon's current line-up, but offers a surprising feature-set for its price point. Unlike most entry-level cameras, the zoom offers true wide-angle coverage, the video recording is in 720p HD, and there's even a small optical viewfinder which is handy when the screen becomes hard to view in direct sunlight, or if the battery is running low on charge. Canon's EF 500mm f4L IS USM is a super-telephoto lens adored by wildlife and sports photographers alike. The focal length, equivalent to 800mm on a cropped-frame body, delivers decent-sized images of distant subjects, while the f4 maximum aperture allows you to isolate them with a very shallow depth-of-field. It's a superb lens but don't let the huge price tag put you off - for less than you think, you could rent one for a special event, which is exactly what I did for a recent trip to Florida to view a Space Shuttle launch.
