Hi all,
I would like to take Portraits photos, but not sure to get EF 50mm f/1.4 USM or EF 50mm f/1.8 II.
Some people said 1.8 should be enough and better than 1.4, and of course its much cheaper. And the bokeh difference for both lenses is not that much also.
Anyone who tried these 2 lens can give a review on this?
TYIA. :)

the 50 f/1.4 will give you more options. it should be sharper at f/1.8 then the 50 f/1.8 which is not known to be sharp wide open.
since you are shooting portraits, have you considered the 85 f/1.8? that is a really excellent lens that is sharp wide open. you may have to stand further back depending on the shot you want but the results will look better than a 50mm.

hmm I have look through 85 f/1.8 too. But I worry that space is a concern if i shoot it a small place ie studio.. There seems too much varieties, and as a new SLR user.. I cant decide what to buy. :knock1:
btw, the avatar pic is using what type of lens?

i have shot halfbody shots using an 85 f/1.8 at slcc...stand against the far wall
anyway for headshots and halfbody shots, the 85 rocks. for full body you can use the 50.
i used a 105 f/2.8 macro on a fullframe cam for my avatar shot. for crop bodies you can use the 85.

i have both 50 f1.8 and f1.4, both serve my purpose of shooting wide open, but 1.4 still rock when i using in my FF love the smoothness of bokeh.

thanks all for ur views.. :D
The 50mm f1.4 is a lovely lens to explore. If you can afford it, go for it.
Do not be fixated on which focal length is for portraits. Some use 300mm, some use 14mm. Frame the portrait in your mind, then select the lens which has the focal length and f/stop you will need for a desired effect.
