Laptop LCD appearing bluish has many meanings. It may be caused by settings, super off calibration or even hardware problems. Maybe you wanna show me the next time you see me? :D

how to tell if calibration is needed?
how to tell if calibration is needed?
Several factors:
New monitors need to be calibrated
Monitors should be calibrated regularly as color shifts occur over time
1 yr old monitor ~ 1ce /3-4 weeks 2 years old ~ 1ce /2-3 weeks 3 years old ~ 1ce /2 weeks >3 yrs, throw away get new one
After calibration, you press the contrast/brightness button - recalibrate necessary
Most calibration software will have an alarm built in to warn the user if the color profile created is too old, (eg: EyeOne Match) based on how long you set it to prompt you.
No monitor is perfect upon opened from the corrugated box.
Most would perform well out of the box, but calibration will bring out the highlights/shadows and ensures your colors are correct for prints/viewing.

The programs come with the calibration hardware.
You need the calibration hardware to work with the software to achieve the calibration.
You can start with EyeOne2 or the Xrite.
Hi, I am newbie here.
Had asked a specialist how much it cost to calibrate a computer and was quoted S$8k for end to end solutioning. I told them I dun have 8k for such luxury and they told me pay by credit card and then do installemnt payment. I was like.....
So for DIY calibration, i just got the spyder and found it quite fun to good to use. But the gamma setting was qute a feat. When I see all the curves I went
So i clicked yes to everything and then viola, improved color temperature for my small mac.
Next is to try match print from setting.... The best part is, I dont have a color printer yet. :victory:
Perhaps thats the pain of going digital. DIY from start to print.

$8K! how come so expensive?

Getting a suite of X-rite or Eye One tools for printer/monitor/paper would probably cost about $5K max. And you can do it yourself over and over.

Well it really beats me why they told me this price. I went to one of the booths (just behind the reception tables) at the ADOBE CS3 launch recently at raffles. They said they were an SI (system integrator) which implement projects for special printing needs and for demanding graphic designers. I think they had the monaco calibrator which was why I was attracted to their booth. I was quite frank telling them 8k was way out of the league for any photographer making a simple living. When I ask if the monaco can work standalone, the lady told me not really without the professional calibration.
I didnt bother to ask them for name card as I found their price way above the norm. I asked the lady twice about the price to confirm the figure. Maybe its really a lot of hardwork looking at screens, clicking the mousepads, but for that price, I'd rather make a L lens shopping spree at shanghai.
With my spyder bought from CP, I found it good enough for my immediate needs. :)

Quite true, but still anything over $1k for calibration seems over for me. I rather let the lab do the rightful tuning according to the skin tone I desire for lab prints.

The problem is, sometimes the lab might not know what you want, so sending in already color corrected files and telling the lab NOT to do any editing will result in what you want. There are cases I sent in files that are ambient shot (aka orangey) and the shop happily corrected it for me.
Since then I normally send in photos and request them not to be touched at all during printing. Anyway the calibration that was offered to you probably included, various paper profiling, monitor profiling, ink&printer profiling, but still it's over the wall for 8K. ;)

Good tip there, thanks for sharing.
And, true, I do not doubt the SI quality of work if it deems appropriate for the right job.
Cheers!

No problems, either that or you send to a lab that knows your style already and knows what to do and what not to do.
Normally I throw mine to Kim Tian Digital Imaging and specifically to Michelle. She knows what I want, so I safely can trust her. That's why sometimes people say it's important to stick to a regular lab, ;)
Anyway just colour profile the monitor will be fine, I normally send to my Epson R210 to print from CS2, and it's printing fine, slight mismatch in tones but not that noticeable unless you're very nitpicking. No choice.... printer and paper profiling can take hours and it's not cheap to buy the suite ;)
Indeed, getting the print profile right takes time to tweek.
Otherwise, hours of PS can be spent on the wrong setting, only to find that the lab needs to perform tweeking to make it right. I usually go to color lab. Slow n steady, but a lil ex. Heard about KT as well being reliable. KT has been arond no doubt and they do try to accomodate to professional photogs who shoot to feed. Was informed that 35mm Colour Lab is quite good, but the print cost is quite high (AFAIK). Maybe if client pays 5-8k, higher premium wont matter for repu sake. But I had been to an established lab giving super pinky skin and that was like omg (not to nice to put lab name here as I know the bosses for some yrs). Dunno what to say as I was walking out.
Nice chatting with you, espn. May your sports channel get better each day!
