Learn how to create this photo manipulation that mixes a winter scene with fire. Find out how to create particle lights using Photoshop’s brush tool and some layer styles then complete the image with an old-style paper texture.
Photoshop Tutorial
Downloads you need for this Photoshop tutorial
We’re going to use 3 stock photos. Download the files below:
Winter (http://browse.deviantart.com/resources/stockart/places/?qh=§ion=&q=winter#/dsrscv) by busangane (http://busangane.deviantart.com/)
Blue Gown (http://browse.deviantart.com/resources/stockart/model/?q=cutout&order=9&offset=48#/ds797q) by mizzd-stock (http://mizzd-stock.deviantart.com/)
Old Paper (http://browse.deviantart.com/resources/textures/?q=paper&order=9&offset=24#/d175ua5) by struckdumb (http://struckdumb.deviantart.com/)
Step 1
Open the Winter photo into Photoshop. You can open files in Photoshop by going to File > Open.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/image1.png
Step 2
Next, go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Brightness/Contrast. You’ll get a new layer like this.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/image2.png
Set the Brightness to –150 and Contrast to 100. If you don’t see this panel, go to Window > Adjustments. Make sure you have the “Use Legacy” setting turned off – if you have it on Photoshop will use the old Brightness/Contrast tool which gives less appealing results.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/image3.png
Here’s the image darkened. It looks more like a nighttime photo now!
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/image4.png
Step 3
Go to File > Place. Pick the photo of the girl in the blue gown then click OK. Transform it to something like this:
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/image5.png
Now go to Image > Transform > Flip Horizontal.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/image6.png
Step 4
Now we’re going to work on the lighting and color of the girl so that she matches the background image. This is really easy to do and you don’t have to guess so much. First, fix the lighting so that it matches.
Before we can edit the image, you need to rasterize the layer. Go to Layer > Rasterize Layer. Now go to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast. Use the settings shown below.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/image7.png
Step 5
Next, we’re going to fix the color. Make sure you have the layer with the girl selected then go to Image > Adjustments > Match Color. First, in the Source area, pick the file that you’re working on – in my case it’s called Untitled-3. Then in the Layer area, pick the Background layer. It should find the background layer.
Next, adjust the Luminance and Color Intensity settings so that you get something like this:
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/image8.png
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/image9.png
Step 6
Now we’re going to work on the shadow for the girl. Duplicate the layer of the girl and place it as the 2nd layer. Name this layer Shadow.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/image10.png
Step 7
Now go to Edit > Free Transform. Transform the layer like shown in the image below. Basically we flipped it upside down then skewed it. To skew, just hold the Ctrl or Cmd key and drag one of the nodes.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/image11.png
Step 8
Hold down the Ctrl or Cmd key then click on the Shadow to create a selection of it. You have to click on the layer thumbnail (not the layer name) to make the selection.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/image12.png
Step 9
Now go to Edit > Fill. Set the contents to Black then click OK.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/image13.png
Here’s the shadow! Press Ctrl+D or Cmd+D to deselect.

Step 2
Crop the image like this with the Crop tool.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/image1.png
Step 3
We’re going to start by turning this cave image into an underwater scene. Start by adding a new Hue/Saturation adjustment layer (layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation).

Here’s what your image looks like.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/image4.png
Step 4
Add a new Solid Color adjustment layer. You can do this by going to Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/image5.png
Make sure this fill layer is set as the top layer. Reduce the opacity to 50% – this is just a temporary opacity change (we’ll set it back to 100% later) so that we can see the layers below.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/image6.png
Step 5
Select the Rectangular Marquee tool and create a selection like this.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/image7.png
Step 6
Go to Select > Modify > Feather. Set the Feather Radius to around 100 pixels. If you’re using a higher resolution image, you may need to increase this setting so that you get a smoother transition.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/image8.png
Step 7
First, make sure you the the layer mask for the color fill layer selected. You can select it by clicking on the thumbnail (highlighted yellow in the image below).
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/image9.png
Go to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast. Checkmark the “Use Legacy” option then adjust the settings like shown below.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/image10.png
Step 8
Press Ctrl+D (Cmd+D on a Mac) to deselect then set the opacity back to 100%.

Learn how to create real 3D text all inside Photoshop CS5 Extended! This tutorial will show you how to create a grungy poster out of the modern 3D text effect that you will learn how to make. You will also learn some tricks such as how to randomize brush settings to avoid “clone-stamp patterns”.
Photoshop Tutorial
Downloads you need for this Photoshop tutorial
To follow this Photoshop tutorial, you’ll need the following stock image and Photoshop brushes. You also need Photoshop CS5 Extended.
Kinetic Brush Set (http://fav.me/d29rm94) – ShiftyJ (http://shiftyj.deviantart.com/)
Wrinkled Packing Paper Textures (http://photoshoptutorials.ws/photoshop-downloads/stock-textures/wrinkled-packing-paper-textures.html) – Photoshop Tutorials (http://photoshoptutorials.ws/)
Step 1
Start this Photoshop tutorial by creating a new Letter sized document at 300 DPI. Using a high DPI lets you print out your artwork at the best quality.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/image46.png
Step 2
First, we’re going to darken the background slightly so that it’s a light-gray. The quickest way to do this is to press Ctrl+U (Command+U on a Mac) and reducing the lightness. Reduce the Lightness to –15 then click OK.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/image47.png
Your document will now just be a plain gray color.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/image48.png
Step 3
Use the Text tool to type in some text using the font of your choice. Position it in the center and adjust the text-size so that it fits the width of the image (without going over the edge).
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/image49.png
Step 4
Go to 3D > Render > Repousse. You need Photoshop CS5 Extended to get access to this tool. Photoshop will give you a warning telling you that it will rasterize the text. This is okay – just click Yes.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/image50.png
In the Reposse setting, set the Depth to around 0.3. In the Materials, click on the top left drop down and select the no materials preset. Click OK.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/image51.png
Here’s what your 3D text looks like!
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/image52.png
Step 5
Select the 3D Object Rotate tool.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/image53.png
Hold down the Shift key then drag upwards on the text. Holding the shift key snaps your rotation so that it is only moving in 45 degree increments – basically, this lets you rotate it perfectly straight.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/image54.png
Step 6
Press Ctrl/Cmd+T (or you can go to Edit > Free Transform if it doesn’t work). Photoshop will ask if you want to convert it to a smart object – click yes.
http://tutorialpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/image55.png
Rotate and scale your text like this. Hold down the Shift key while you’re making the adjustments so that the aspect ratio of your text stays the same (in other words, so your text doesn’t get taller or shorter)
