Many of my prize photos were printed in a makeshift darkroom and hung to dry on temporary lines set up in a small bathroom. So my technical and aesthetic training in photography and darkroom skills was solid and strong, right from the beginning.

An ambrotype is one of the earliest forms of photographs. Also called ambros, they are negative images that are transferred to glass. A backing is applied to the glass, creating a positive image. Developed by Frederick Scott Archer in 1851, they had a lifespan of only a decade or two, and were already dying out in the 1860s thanks to the tintype and later forms of card stock-like photos called carte de visites (CDVs) and cabinet cards.

While it can be decorative, mat board also serves an utilitarian function in terms of protecting artwork. Every artist wants to keep the glazing from ever touching the surface of the artwork, and a paper mat board can work well in this regard. A paper mat helps to keep the air flow working within the frame, and proper air flow is important because without it, condensation can develop inside the frame. Moisture can easily damage the surface of a painting, and this is especially true with photographs.

The idea behind "time lapse photography" is take a series of images or short segments of video over a set interval of time. Combine these images together to make a slow event happen faster, or a fast event happen slower. One fun way to watch a solid turn to a liquid is to build a miniature snowman in a pan, set up a camera, and begin taking regular photos throughout the melting of the snowman. With a miniature snowman it only takes about an hour or so to completely melt. States of matter become much more interesting when students can teach others and document the changes through time lapse photography.

We all know how as times change, technology changes along with it. When boomers were growing up, good old film was used to take photos. I myself am an echo boomer, in my mid 30s, but I remember the 110 film, the 35mm film, as well as Polaroid Instant Film. The film was also sold based on how many photos you wanted to take. These amounts were usually 24 exposures, or 36 exposures. I know you can still purchase a Polaroid Instant Camera, as well as cameras that will use the 35mm film. However, according to the research I have done, the only way to find cameras that take the 110 film, are through a site such as eBay.

My 5 year old daughter came home from Kindergarten today with a letter from the school to all parents. Apparently a photographer was spotted by staff, with a tripod and camera, and when he observed school staff watching him, he promptly packed up his gear and left. The school called the police, notified the school district, nearby schools, and pretty much everyone else short of the National Guard. It is unclear from the carefully worded letter if the photographer was on school property or not, it sounds like he wasn't. There is a heavily wooded public area next to the school with plenty of wildlife. It's also unclear whether or not he was taking pictures of the children, or if the camera was pointing into the wooded area. The letter simply states staff observed him with a camera on a tripod, and he quickly left when he saw staff watching him.

It is not the first time that this has happened. The more modest camera model assumes a responsibility to reveal a new technology that will eventually be taken over by more glamorous models. Thus it came to pass, that the EOS400D played the role of guinea pig. It was the first Canon SLR system with integrated sensor cleaning. With this service as a cornerstone of its current cutting edge cameras, the EOS 400D paved the way for other entry level SLR products from Canon. Some minor amendments and more than 2-megapixel resolution helps distinguish it from the EOS 350D, which inherits its good quality, good price ... and some outstanding issues for improvement from it's predecessor.

Although the emergence of increasingly smaller SLR models is a popular one these days, many purists don't think that's such a good idea. The Canon EOS 400D, would fall into this category, and the truth is that its size and weight may serve to suggest that it's a less capable camera then it really is. A fact that, coupled with its performance and price, allows for an entry level SLR which amateur photographers may jump at. The boxes are shallow, about three inches deep, but this allows you ample room to easily sort your photographs in different ways. You could choose several photo boxes and use them to sort your photos by the year taken. Another way to sort with photo boxes is to separate the pictures by subject matter, with a box for each different subject. Photographs can also be sorted into individual photo storage boxes by the name of each photographer.
