Do you prefer CF cards or SD cards? Why?

I personally prefer CF cards because they are easier to find because its bigger and more durable because they don't have electronic chips exposed.

I too prefer the CF for it's hard build, ie not easy to bend. My first digital cam bought in 2000 was a P&S Canon Ixus which use the CF, love that card format since then.:coolnod:

As a matter of fact, you are right. I am also taking the memory card type into consideration before buying a new camera. After all, it's the memory card that stores those memorable moments, not the camera itself.

Other than helping me to choose a camera, I was also hoping that this thread will become something similar to a debate so we can see both sides (for and against) without being blinded by our own bias.

ok...what i feel is that media format is not really that important. i think you should look at the various specifications and decide which camera suits your needs, regardless whether it uses CF, SD, XD or MS. for me i would look at image quality, color reproduction, noise control first.

btw..talking about CF, don't forget that it is possible for a connector pin to break off and get stuck in one of the holes in the CF card rendering it unusable.

Hello, everybody,

I have a question which might be a bit silly so bear with me. Are some card formats faster than the other? The reason I ask is that I currently own Nikon Coolpix 4500 which uses CF type card. It's very slow taking pictures (could be a few seconds before I press the button and the picture is actually taken) and uploading them to the card (sometimes it even "locks" for a few seconds after the shot). Has it something to do with the card or it's more an issue with camera's internal processor? I would think the later, but from the reviews it seems that the card also plays its part. Folks with CF-type of cameras seem to complain a lot about its speed, while people with SD describe their cameras as "fast".

Is this just my impression, or, indeed, cameras which use SD are faster than CF ones?

Are some card formats faster than the other?

This depends on the speed of the card. In general, CF is slightly faster speed than SD. BUT a 400X SD card can easily overtakes a 150X CF card.

Professionals use both formats nowadays. So don't let the card format hinders your decision. Instead, look out for image quality, low high-ISO noise, versatility and practicality.
