Also, from what I see there are many new members who are practically pro and not newbies in photography at all.

try using lens which are fr 2.8 to 5.6 with 18-200 the lens apeture range fr 3.5-6.3 which is inconsistent using f8 will not do as which if u using indoor sport or outdoor sport u need a fast lens to acheive clear sharp images.
sport photography need fast lens with fast speed to freeze the subjects
read here it tell you more

hmm wondering y like tat.. Blur image can result from motion blur or handshake. There's too little information to determine your problem. How about posting a some photos?
We need to determine certain other settings. What focal length exactly were you using? How far was the subject? How fast was the action i.e. what sports being played? Could or did you do panning?
You don't always need a fast lens to shoot fast sports. I have used f8 for sports like boat races, wakeboarding etc as well as birds in flight but at high iso settings slightly higher than ideal to get a higher shutter speed if required. However, too high might compromise image quality.
Otoh, I have sharp shots of race cars in full flight at shutter speeds as low as 1/30 by panning the subject so shutter speed alone does not tell much.
P.S.: If you like you can check our my newbie shots in some of the events I covered here - http://s5.photobucket.com/albums/y151/JkChan/Sports/

thanks for your question. do post the pictures and it's settings up so that we can pin point out any problems that you have. on side note do not rely on camera/lenses image stablizers such as VR for nikon when shooting moving subjects. VR doesn't work when subject is moving. only help when you're having unstable hands on stationary subjects.
post ur pics up and we'll see.
