ur equipments are your tools to create an image. so the best advice i'd give is use it according to your creativity. you're the photographer...... you have to decide your own.
Why do you need to worry about wire and wireless if your existing setup is sufficient to take what you want?

Yes, I tried placing my sb800 behind the white cloth backdrop and reflectors boucing light on the Carlsberg bottle. The label is a bit under, if I have a second flash to fill in the effect will be better.

My sync cord is a modified wire, the connection is sometime no good. I thought of adding a second flash and su800 to my system.

u can try using table lamp to lit the background right? sometimes u can also use mirrors for max light reflecting.

D200 and above the in-built flash can be used for commandering SB-600/800/900 as slave aka CLS (corridor lighting system). For cameras without, you can consider commandering the CLS with SB-800/900 or with SU-800.
SU-800 currently is not known to be sold separately although there was this intention (from the very last conversation I had with the Nikon Sales rep a long time ago) and it only comes with the R1-C1 Macro Ring flash set.
Another way of triggering the flash, for flashes without CLS capabilities or remote triggering capabilities, is to consider the usage of the SU-4, which will trigger the flash itself.
These are a few viable options though I very much prefer CLS over traditional SU-4 as I can control all the flashes output via my master speedlight and up to 64 speedlights (probably show off rather than practical usage).

Actually there is such a gadget available in Singapore. You can purchase it from Orient Photo at Sim Lim Square. It is made in China of course, and uses 2 AA size batteries. It is much bigger than the SU-800 physically.
How reliable is this device I am not sure, but it does provide a much cheaper alternative to SU-800 (which costs over S$500).

About $50-$70.
Hi espn, just wondering is there any third party brand/model that can be used as commander with same function as SU-800 since it is not sold separately.:confused1:Not to my knowledge as the RF and communication is like designed and programmed by Nikon themselves, they would know better than others on how to link up the flashes flawlessly. Though I'm pretty sure there are people who are very good at reverse engineering stuff ;)
I do get a quote from TK for su800 some month ago, but never hear of su-4.
Thank a lot.SU-4 is pretty 'old'-school already, a set can cost about $100+. If you need SU-4 for 4 flashes then you're looking at $400++ more.
SU-4 were in the days where technology is not up to par like these days with CLS. Just like last time where cameras rely on sync cords to trigger their studio flashes, these days, there're wireless triggers, etc.
So if I use built-in flash commander mode and sb800, the second flash to buy should be which model?
ThankAny one which is able to be controlled by CLS, SB600/800/900 is fine.
Thank I will go TK to check price of sb600. Why you still recomend sb800 as it is no longer in production. The price is almost same as sb900.Price should be about $360-380. 2nd hand SB-800 is about $450, which is about $250 less than SB-900. Given a good set, SB-800 can last quite long.
If you only need it for CLS, perhaps SB-600 is sufficient.

to understand commander mode, i suggest you read your D200 camera manual and test your sb800 with your D200. that's similar function in sb800, sb900 and su800.
sb600 do not have commander mode.... it means it cannot command any other flash eg sb600 or sb800 to trigger CLS mode.

The Pocket Wizard Plus II is NOT cheaper than SU-800. A single unit costs S$300+. You will need 2 units to work.
The advantage is you will have great range, thus better flexibility.

Ooi Ooi Mr Jukon you buy already or not ar? Hold your horse first ley...
Your question about the SB600 cannot be master thing hor.... meaning is not all flash light can 'trigger' other flash lights. Put simple, expensive one can function as 'Master' and cheaper one only function as 'Slave'. So when master fire, slave also fire. My nikon power not so powerful but I remember SB800 is expensive one so can MASTER and SB600 cheaper so be the slave lor...
But hor since D70 the body got function to trigger flash liao leh... I think your body is higher range so sure also have...
Anyway if you count 1xMaster + 3xslave how much hor... now you shooting alot of still life liaoz... maybe get strobes cheaper leh... I dunno but I is 2 flash not enuff. best is got 4 becos 1 left 1 right 1 top 1 bottom...
Or maybe you can explore the website of 'Strobist'. I also looking at information there. The people there siao one can DIY alot of lights and some idea is also good idea leh. What modify light tubes lah, fluoresent lights lah, LED lah, the normal philips energy saving bulbs also can... they make DIY beauty dish, ring light, even stanley use that big ball they also DIY with paper lanturn buy from IKEA ar... oh, I also see got people put a light into a dunno what helium or what balloon and use like a moon!!! si beh ho...

SB600 is for fill-in as it is not convenient to use reflector in eating place. You are very right 4 flash system is the best but at this moment it is just fine adding a flash to team up my sb800. Later then think of su800 and others. Strobes lack mobilities many friends sold after a period of use.

Aiyah.... $60 is the Made in China "Pocket Wizard" kit. The kit contains 1 transmitter and 1 receiver. The transmitter goes on your camera. The receiver goes on your Nikon flash.
However, each real Pocket Wizard Plus II can function as both a transmitter and a receiver. You will require 2 Plus II units to work (which cost about S$700 liao).
