The kit is selling for S$1,050 at Orient Photo, with local warranty.

Too bad it doesn't meter with AiS lens..... Otherwise, I will consider it as a backup camera.

D300, so that I can utilize my MF lenses with metering.

D300... no doubt. It is a better body.

I had been thinking of buying a D300 lately. However, as I don't need its sophisticated features and due to budget constraint, I bought a pre-owned D50 as a back-up body to my S5 Pro. I had also considered the D5000, but decided on the D50, as D50 is a capable and reliable DSLR too IMHO. A pre-owned one is affordable too.

If you have $1,050 to spend, you may wish to consider buying:
1) A pre-owned S5 Pro (about $900)
2) A pre-owned D200 (about $800)
3) A pre-owned D80 (about $700)
4) A pre-owned D70s (about $550)
5) A pre-owned D50 ($350-$450, depending on shutter count and condition)

All of the above cameras should be able to hold its own against or even exceed the new D5000 in terms of performance in one way or another IMHO. I personally prefer the pre-owned D50 in terms of value. Let's say you can land one at the average selling price of $350, you still have $700 left to buy a pre-owned Nikkor 16-85VR. Good sharp lens. When buying a pre-owned camera, check for dead pixels, condition of camera and shutter count. Sometimes even new cameras have dead pixels.

Thanks to all who comments as I am gathering information on whether to go for it..

i wonder if out of the box, D50 is good or D5000. i'm keen on out of the box quality images. swivel lcd screen doesn't matter much. megapixels also not a matter to me.

I am not sure about the D5000, but the out of camera output of the D50 is impressive (colours are excellent and sharpness is commendable). No need to PP the shots. Even the built in flash is very good. At $350-$400 pre-owned, I believe it is good value. Even cheaper than a pre-owned LX3 (I can't get used to its colour, especially skin tone. Maybe it is just me after using the S5 Pro and F31fd perhaps, although LX3 is still my top pick for a compact camera due to its wider angle lens and it has the largest aperture of all the compacts for low light photography) and many higher end compact cameras.

I believe that the D5000 is good also, but at $1,050, it is about the same price that I paid for my brand new S5 Pro, so it does not make economic sense to me. Not that the D5000 is a lesser camera, but I prefer the S5 Pro with my battery grip on, any day of the week.

I have tried the D5000 briefly at one of the shops. The D5000's lack of a top LCD display bothers me a lot. If I am not wrong, some of my auto-focus lenses (e.g. Tokina 11-16) will have to become manual focus lenses, as the D5000 does not have a built-in focussing motor. Maybe someone in this forum may taunt me sooner or later for being cheapskate by buying a pre-owned camera, but who cares? Even the moderators of some other forums are buying pre-owned cameras.

Good night.

The D50 is a very good camera with brilliant colors and beautiful outputs. A worthy back-up body for the S5 Pro.

Nikon D5000 is a good quality camera. It has a decent look. A remarkable blend of simplicity and highly-advanced DSLR capabilities, the compact and powerful D5000 offers breathtaking 12.3-megapixel image quality, along with a flexible, Vari-angle, Live View monitor for fresh picture-taking perspectives.

My niece just got one on her 13th birthday (she is just in Sec 1) last Saturday..... I have got the chance to fiddle with her D5000, and this is my conclusion -

The D5000 is a very basic DSLR. Don't expect it to be as versatile as the D90 or the D60 even. The camera body feels a bit smallish in my hands. The balance is front heavy with a 16-85 AFS lens (which belongs to my cousin). However, operation of the camera is possible with one hand (with VR turns on of course). AF speed under good lighting is on par with D90 (yes, better than D60), however, it slows down significantly, hesitates and hunts a bit when focusing under low light. Writing and reading of RAW files is fast.

Overall, it is a good camera for beginners and those who do not want a lug around a big and heavy camera. For those who demand more from their camera, however, you may want to look elsewhere.

Jacob: to you and me who are used to handling semi-pro and professional level DSLRs, the D5000 really feels like a toy.

Even with my humble skills, the D50 is capable of reproducing the baby skin colour of the S5 Pro. Delicious skin colour ....slurp!!
