Less than a year ago, I was dragged into photography by a friend. I have zero knowledge of photography then, but being a friend, I went along. With a digital pro-sumer camera in my hand and a film rangefinder in his, we took our cameras to the streets and started shooting. With some luck, I managed some decent photographs. From then on, I decided I like photography enough to invest some time and money in it.

Some of you might wonder if paying for courses in photography is worth it, since not all of us are looking to become full time professional photographers. Some might feel more comfortable learning in an ad-hoc manner—slowly picking up bits and pieces of knowledge from the internet, friends, and even strangers—best of all, for free. After all, we have already paid so much for a camera, why spend more?

But life is full of moments that will not wait for you.

I wish I had taken up this course when I was in America for an exchange program more than a year back. The scenery there was so different from Singapore’s and is exceedingly beautiful.

One of the saddest moments of my life was when my pet was dying when I was 17. I managed to run more than half a mile to the nearest photography store, bought a disposable, and took some photos. I was lucky to get back in time to take a few photos before it breathed its last. Look around you and you will see people and events that are worth remembering. Photography is the best way to remember someone. :)

I decided that if I have to learn photography, I have to adopt the “leave-no-stone-unturned” approach and take up a course. The first one that comes in mind was SLCC’s because I attended a free workshop by them more than 5 years ago. At that point of time, there are many other course providers that might be cheaper, but I went with my heart.

Today, there are many other providers around that provide basic photography course. But SLCC still offers the best value in terms of syllabus by packaging its course as a whole—instead of splitting the same thing into multiple courses like some of its competitors.

When you take up a course in SLCC, you not only pick up knowledge but also join a family of photographers which goes a long way back. Joanne and Stanley are open, direct and honest people when it comes to teaching.

Long after my basic course, I still remember taking my event photographs to them for critique and Joanne do not mind sitting down with me and teaching me things that she wasn’t obliged to. And in the same spirit I am here writing this long entry even though I wasn’t asked to.

Give this course a try and you will not regret it. You will enjoy photography more. :o
