How about the forum does a series of SEO to come up top of search engines?

Cause when I search Singapore Photography, another forum comes up.

Getting right on top of the search is no easy matter. Eg if you search "Singapore Photography" you will get "approximately 23,900,000 results". How to be number one? Or even in the top 30 since most surfers do not go beyond page 3.

So it is not just a case of "do a series of SEO to come up top". Among other things, it depends on the popularity of the site. If many people visit, then the Search Engines will think this must be a good site and so rank it higher. So unless this place becomes more popular than "the other forum" it will lose out.

Other factors, more relevant to websites, include the choice of keywords and having them placed strategically on every page - not too many, not too few and placed in all the correct places, eg headline, first 60 characters, not too often in first 500 characters, etc etc.

Choosing which keyword to use is, itself, a science and an art. It requires much research. eg do we know whether more people search Singapore Photography or Photography Singapore or Photography in Singapore, or Singapore Photography Forum, etc etc etc. There are countless possibilities. This is the demand side. On the supply side, we need also to find out how many sites use the same keywords as you? If many, then you face stiff competition. If few, either you have chosen a great keyword that will get you to the top, or a lousy one that no one else wants. Entire books can be written - and have been written - on SEO.

The best programme I know that teaches this is SiteBuildIt (http://www.sitesell.com/richardseah.html). I join this programme, it costs me US$299 per website per year and I have learned a fair bit, enough to have several of my web pages in the Top 10 of Google, Yahoo and others. Still, that is not the end of the story. Some of my pages that are ranked #1 or at least higher than #10 still do not get as many visitors as other pages ranked >30.

This is very complex subject. Whoever knows all or most of the secrets can become very very rich.

Finally, the SEO "game" is constantly changing as search engines like Google constantly fine tune their algorithms both to weed out people who try to cheat the SEO system, as well as to reward those who produce truly good, informative websites. So what works today may not work tomorrow. The one thing that works is to produce really good websites / forums / blogs. Then you will get a lot of visitors without SEO and... chances are, you will also get high search engine rankings.

Success creates more success.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. Other forms of search engine marketing (SEM) target paid listings. In general, the earlier (or higher on the page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a website web presence.

As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work and what people search for. Optimizing a website may involve editing its content and HTML and associated coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines. Promoting a site to increase the number of backlinks, or inbound links, is another SEO tactic.

1) Start with investigation into sites that already rank for the keywords you are interested in. Personally, I still use Yahoo Site Explorer to check out those back-links and a few other methods too. The scope of sites you are looking for here needs to be really wide. Don’t just target individual keywords, check out all areas relevant to the site you are hoping to build links for. Try to promote the website as a much valued resource and in return Google will do the same. Use GOOGLE ! Many overlook this. Simply check out all those sites that are in the top two pages and find out why.

2) Be totally honest in your approach to asking other websites for a link. If you are using automated tools to do the requests at least make sure they contain a personalised message. ( I have always found that the manual method is far more successful)

3) Be wary of submitting to directories, such “high ranked PR ” sites often dilute the relevancy of your target area.Yep, this sounds like a really obvious tip. But sometimes those directories are actually pretty well disguised.

4) Its not all about page rank of websites, remember Google can be behind with its page rank. Many skip over the PR1 or PR2 sites, mistake, checking through their back links can provide you with some really great resources.

5) Ask yourself why all the competitors in a particular industry have a link on a website. Further investigation into this is always worthwhile
