You'll need to check your Nikon body manual whether the pop-up flash can remotely trigger the SB-600.

If you own one of these bodies, D70, D80, D90, D200, D300 and D700
you can use the commander mode on these cameras to trigger the SB600 wirelessly as remote. (CLS)

Hope this help..

correct me if i'm wrong.

sb600: slave triggering is NO. CLS is yes as remote only. NOT master.
sb800: slave triggering YES(SU-4 mode). CLS YES as remote. CLS YES as master.

I use D200, SB800 (1st flash) and SB600 (2nd flash) so the commander mode in D200 will trigger the 2 flashs wirelessly.

You can set your SB800 (1st flash) under one Group A and the SB600 (2nd flash) on Group B. This is use to set-up to different lightning situation.

E.G. Group A for Main light, Group B for Fill Light

Just answer your second question. If you intend to fire your flashes not directly mounted on your cam body you will need the remote cords or wireless flash trigger - a transmitter and at least one receiver for each flash unit you use in a set up.

sb600 can be fired as a SLAVE only

so better if your body has a commander mode for easy CLS

depends on what you need

you can buy 2 sb600's and a wireless trigger to have more creative control
