Newbie here: Where can I get D90 or D5000 cheaper?

Understand that there is a lot of shops that will "carrot chop" you if you are newbies?

Any recommendations please?

honestly speaking..... choice of lenses should be the priority instead of the camera body. so do some homework first. you may want to ask some questions in sgshoot as well.:sweat:

The D90 will give you better value and offers more versatility as you progresses.

Be patient, my friend. Don't jump into conclusions. Buying a camera is like buying a pair of shoes. It has to fit your requirements and habits, yet leaving enough room for growth. Remember, budget can be stretched. But once you have bought something, it is harder for you to turn back unless you are willing to sell your camera at a lost. As Jacob had mentioned, do your homework.

The only shop that I am quite sure won't carrot you, is TK Foto. You can purchase from them safely. Foreigner or local they all quote the same price.

Sim Lim Sq, I only patronise Orient Photo on Level 6.

FYI, payment mode cash will save about 1-2%, compare to credit card payment.

most of my cameras & equipments bought from Cathay.
my experience dealing with them are very pleasant.
As for equipments, don guess, ask for local warranty, check on the warranty card with Nikon Singapore stamp.

If you want good service and reasonable pricing, go to either TK Foto (ask for Richard), Orient Photo* (ask for Stanley or Gong [mandarin speaking]) or MS Color (ask for Florence).

If you want good service and don't mind waiting, go to John 3:16 (ask for Sam or Leslie).

I used to purchase my equipment from Cathay Photo, but ever since their prices increase drastically and unreasonably, I stopped patronizing them.

* By the way, Orient Photo no longer bring in gray Nikon DSLRs. Although, some of the lenses and accessories are still gray. Do ask them clearly first before you buy. I had bought a few gray Nikon lenses and flashes (with 1 year store warranty) from them. I have no problem so far.

nikon warranty requires receipt as proof of purchase else it'll revert to manufacturing date etc.

like others have said, they are a very friendly bunch. apart from having to wait your turn during peak hours, you won't regret buying from them. they may teasingly ask you to buy canon, but they won't try to change your mind, esp if you already know what you want.

More reputable shops should be John3:16, Cathay Photo (with outlets at Peninsula and Marina), Alan Photo etc sorry if i missed some other good shops not known to me. Once in a while some people may have once or twice of bad experience with them but its unlike other 'shops' which received constant complaints from buyers.

It really depends on how your hobby in taking photos will progress on in future. No one can predict your mood and priorities in life, how photography will develop in you - an interest, pastime or just another waste of time. However if you were to eventually take this up as a pastime doing casual shots then D5000 is the way to go. D90 will last you a while if you do get serious in photography. You can have some choices getting lenses that do not have build-in focusing motor since the cam already has one. D5000 do not have that. The kit lenses should be good enough for starters to explore taking images before they finally decide on what lenses they may need to add on with subsequent styles of photos they take more often. I think current D90 package offers a longer reach with the 18-105mm as comapred to the D5000's 18-55mm. If you get the D5000 for less than sgd$2000.00 you can still have enough to buy an external flash unit.
