View Full Version : The Art of being 'How Lian' (conceitedness)

KopiOkaya

I am normally not the 'how lian' type of person, but how can I not be a smug in this case.

I am now a very, very proud owner of a FinePix F31fd. A display unit from Hong Kong. Everything (battery, AC adapter, USB cable, strip, owner's manual and software) included in a NEW box. It is almost mint condition. The best part is the price I paid wasn't exorbitant (hint: much less than the prices those people are selling on Ebay).

But it can still out-performance many of the current point-and-shoot camera models.

Personally, I feel that F31fd loses out in the dynamic range compared to F200EXR. However, it excels in high ISO noise control. In comparison, ISO 1600 of the F31fd is comparable to ISO 800 of the F200EXR. No doubt, the Super CCD EXR is newer but not necessarily better.

Steven Lee of Camera Hospital says he can install a Fujifilm 1/1.6" Super CCD EXR sensor in the F31fd. But I dare not do it.

The F200EXR excels in capturing wider dynamic range. But if we compose on images and control our F30/F30fd carefully, we can achieve similar results.

Shooting conditions also difficult but good thing the performance wasn't good and many people walked off, so we kept switching places until finally got reasonably good seats.

At the Esplanade Concourse was worse, music bad, musicians not photogenic at all, we pan chan (give chance) and stayed for one song, then left.

Bluffname can read liitle Chinese (喝洋墨水, or drink western ink), so better if you can write in English also.

Let me do the translation:

婺剧 is Wu opera. Originated in Jinhua, Zhejiang Province, some 400 years ago, Wu opera is a popular traditional Chinese art form in Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces.

金华市, or "City of Golden Brilliance", is a prefecture-level city in central Zhejiang province, People's Republic of China. The city is also well-known for its Jinhua ham, or 金华火腿. This is a type of dry-cured ham widely used in Chinese cuisines to flavor stewed and braised foods as well as for making the stocks and broths of many Chinese soups.

京剧, or Peking Opera, is a kind of Chinese opera that began in the mid-nineteenth century and became extremely popular among the court of the Qing dynasty. It is considered one of the highest expressions of Chinese culture.

越剧, Yue Opera or Shaoxing opera (not the Chinese wine), is a local Chinese opera popular in the southern regions of the Yangtze River. It originated in Shengxian County (present Shengzhou City), in the Shaoxing region of northeastern Zhejiang Province, which belonged to the Yue State in ancient times, so it was popularly known as Yueju (越劇, Yue opera). Yue opera has a history of about 800 years. It was derived from a kind of story-singing. At first, it was performed with a small drum and hardwood clappers for rhythm and later, choral and orchestral accompaniment was added. It drew some musical elements from Shao opera and subsequently formed its own characteristics.

刘三姐, or Liu San Jie, is a charming, sassy, fictitious heroine of a 1960 film. The movie is set amongst the beautiful karst formations and clear waters of Guangxi Province. Liu San Jie is a rare example of a movie that mixes ideology with just plain fun. The Communist ideals present (idealistic, pure poor vs. predatory rich) are well integrated into the story.

Ah yes.... the famous 金华火腿 (Jinhua Ham). I was about to add this very, very good but expensive delicacy to my list.

Some interesting facts about this flavorful delicacy. Jinhua ham is traditionally produced using the hind legs of a breed of pigs native to China known as the "two ends black" (兩頭烏), which have black hair growing on their heads and hindquarters with white mid-sections. This breed is quick to mature, has excellent meat quality, and thin skin. Ham production begins when air temperatures drops below 10 degrees Celsius. The process takes approximately 8 to 10 months to complete

By the way, Bluffname is a keen cook too; like yourself.

Well, one fine day we'll have some food gathering cum food photo shooting
meet up, eating and enjoy shooting at the same time.

My 拿手好菜 is braised Ox-tail in red wine cooked in a slow-cooker..

This yellow citrus fruit, the 'Budda's hand' very fragrant plant, very good for Chinese tea mixed when dried. Picture taken in JinHua city again.

Sorry didn't mention the pics was not taken with my Fujifilm F200EXR but with my old Canon A620,
colour white balance was not accurate and was taken at the restaurant available light quite dim. I agree to your comments.

Ah yes..... I love ox-tail soup.

Strangely, in western countries 'Buddha's hand' is called 'goblin fingers'.

Wah, OT until now talk about Hairy crab!

This thread is about the art of being 'how lian' mah... We can be 'how lian' about everything; from photography to Chinese classical music to food. Also, this shows that Fuji users are Renaissance Man - can shoot, can play or appreciate music, and can cook.

By the way, "拿手好菜" means specialty dish, or very skilled at preparing a dish.

These "大闸蟹" or Chinese mitten crabs remind me of tarantulas which haven't been evolved fully.

After eating all the hairy crabs, now we're having Italian meal with Italian soda drinks. All these two items are part of the menu I have created for my client.
Both pictures were shot with a PnS camera.

Met up with Andy (andikong) over ice kopi at Sunset Way this afternoon.

I took this image at the kopitiam to test out the dynamic range of the F31fd.

Comparing the two photos, I can concluded that my F200EXR set @ DR400 is no better than the F31 in terms of dynamic range, moreover I have increase my expose by +1/3.

A quick comparison of the shooting specs between the 2 cameras:

Andikong's F200EXR
ISO: 400
Dynamic range: 400%
Shutter speed: 1/420 sec
Aperture: F9
Exposure Compensation: +0.3 EV
Metering mode: Pattern
Focal length: 6mm

KopiOkaya's F31fd
ISO: 100
Dynamic range: NA
Shutter speed: 1/600 sec
Aperture: F5
Exposure Compensation: 0 EV
Metering mode: Pattern
Focal length: 8mm

Strange enough, both cameras reacted differently under the same lighting condition. In fact, with Andy's higher ISO and +0.3 EV settings, the F200EXR should show more shadow areas. My only explanation is that it could be due to the camera's metering and the difference in focal length (6mm vs. 8mm).

My initial thought was the F200EXR, which uses the new generation SuperCCD EXR sensor, should perform better. After this, it really looks like the F31fd is a dinosaur which is able to survive in present day.

i think it depends where you meter and the focal length like you mentioned.

btw i do notice the fuji 200exr has a slight blueish tint to it. bought one recently for my dad and i had a few mins play time with it ;)

I metered at the center (the bright area). I think Andy did the same too.

It looks more like greenish-blue (cyan) tint to me.

The Fuji FUN folks were at Joo Chiat last evening. Midway through the outing, there was a discussion of comparing image quality from a F31fd, F200EXR and F70EXR.
