I have a 70-300 AFS VR and I used to be a RC cars and planes fanatic, therefore I could be the most suitable person to advise you.

In my opinion, the 70-300 focuses too slow for RC planes, but choppers are still manageable. You can miss a few good shots still. You can forget about shooting RC cars unless it is driven slow.

You should consider the 70-200 VRII or the 80-200 AFS instead.
