Richard and I were at the Da:ns Festival 2009 at Esplanade last night (24th October 2009). Theme of the evening was Rasas, which showcases the traditional and folk dances from Asia. There were two performances - one from the Philippines (at the Concourse) and the other from Thailand (at the Waterfront Outdoor Theatre).

Featured here are some of the images of the evening:

OK, here are some of my pixs from the Da:ns festival, shot with a rented "poison" lens, Nikkor 80-400 VR. Most poisonous lens I ever tried.

Hope these pixs will encourage more F.U.N. people to join us next weekend for the Indonesian dances.

I really like this photo.

My version of the same subject and scene. I didn't post this image earlier because I find the light steaks in the background distracting. Other than this, their variations are slight. I wanted to focus on the universal mood, at the same time, keep it as truthful to the original scene as possible. This explains the warmer colors used, which I feel embellish her golden costume more.

Both images are prime examples of same subject, same scene, same entourage, shot from about same angle and in the same direction, but different perspective, interpretation, thought-process and image treatment from both artists. And of course, the previous image was captured with a Nikon 80-400 VR and this image was taken with a Nikon 70-300 VR.

Great. Missed this opportunity to learn from you guys, but I was busy lately. But I have been following this thread faithfully.

Hi, Bluffname and KopiOkaya, I will try to join u guys this Sat. I have even explore with rentcamera@sg for the 80-400mm/ 80-200mm this afternoon.

I got 18-70,11-16 and 85/1.8 only. Doubt the length is enough. Pls advise if I should rent the tele-lens? $50 per day for the lens.

Thanks Bro.

Depends what and how you want to shoot lor...

Both KopiOKaya and I usually use fairly long telephoto zooms, eg 70-300, but there are others in the audience use wide and superwide angle lens, or medium lens etc.

In my case, I like to go in real close and shoot, eg only the face or only the hands. I have a 75-300 and I rented the 80-400 to experience going in even closer. But not many people shoot so close.

In fact, majority in the audience, including some thang chiak photographers, go no longer than 200mm. And quite many use wide angles.

BTW This is for the outdoor stage. For concourse, audience is much close to the performers so no need for such a long tele (unless, again, if you want to go super close).

Hope this helps.

Bluffname is right. Some tan chiak photographers (hired by Esplanade) use telephoto zoom lenses not longer than 200mm (ie: 300mm on DX). There is one photographer there who uses a Nikon 14-24 exclusively.

Since you live so close to Esplanade, why don't you join us this Saturday? Details are posted above.

$50 to shoot is, in my opinion, a bit much to spend, especially if just shoot for F.U.N. If tang chiak or taking part in competition may be worth it.

I believe $50 is for the 70 or 80-200 f2.8?

I would suggest renting the 70-300 VR costs only $28 from Camera Rental. The other day, I paid only $20 for the 80-400, normal price $40, because special offer, but cannot reserve.

If you don't mind a non-VR lens, I can lend (or rent for the price of one pizza at Liang Court, less than $10 heehee) you my 75-300 non-VR, I got one spare. Just have to keep your arms steady. I can generally shoot at down to about 1/50 sec without camera shake, or if lucky, down to 1/25. In fact, I shot for one year and got some prize winning pixs at Esplanade using the non-VR lens.

Personally I would like to shoot with the 80-400 VR because I kena poisoned liao. If no special offer, would you like to share share... you use on Saturday I use on Sunday and return on Monday noon, each of us pay $20.

Yeah, poison together and die together. Suicide pact!

And talking about battery, last weekend, due to all the "excitement" (hush) I forgot to charge my spare battery and shot until "low batt" :-(

I had one battery fully charged plus one half charged. That was enough to shoot only 1+ 8GB card, maybe 700+ images. VR really sucks battery but worth it leh.

Thankfully, the low batt occurred near the end of the performance and the earlier low batt provided me with a few more shots, until the dancers came out to take the final bow

Maybe KopiOKaya can bring along spare batteries to rent out, ha ha. Can earn a few pizzas that way!

WAH... special fish balls more expensive then pizza leh... $6 for an amount that is approx 20 percent the volume of an $8 pizza.

Incidentally, special fish ball is sold at Happy Pot at Makansutra food centre. Recently someone wrote to the press to COMPLAIN that he paid $6 for 8 "tiny fishballs". So the hawker replied and thanked him for the "opportunity to clarify", saying these are special, handmade, yellowtail fishballs, made by a fishball maestro who teaches the art of fishball to other hawkers from around the region!

They are indeed special, soft and tender, no flour to make the balls bounce. The thing is, I ordered the smaller $4 bowl and got 6 fishballs the first time, 7 fishballs the second time. If the original complainant hears this, wah, he sure complain even more!

Yes, therefore can join us anytime. We will have toilet rolls ready to choap a place for you.

Note that seating in the concourse is very limited, so good to be kiasu and early. However, for the 6.15 pm performance, the outside (behind the performers) is still bright and distracting, so might be better to stand and shoot from the side. Then after the show is over and most people leave, we take over the seats ;-)

Looks like this will be a really fun F.U.N. outing with many joining. For some tips on stage photography, you might want to check out my article on the subject at jpg magazine (http://www.jpgmag.com/stories/10339)

These are just my personal recommendations and others may have different approaches. Point #4 about shutter priority, if you are comfortable with shooting manual, I think that is even better. I started to shoot manual recently and find the results more consistent, although sometimes kan cheong forget to adjust, and get badly over/under exposed shots.

Look forward to meeting you guys (and gals if any).

You already very 'pro' mah...

For beginners, I strongly suggest that they shoot at shutter priority mode. It gives more satisfying results.

Do take note of Point #6 about white balance in Bluffname's article. This is vital read. It may save some of you hours of Photoshop work later.

Not pro lah! Pro gets paid leh. Only the camera is S5 Pro! I also sometimes kan cheong and end up over-exposing some pretty ladies. But after shooting Esplanade so long, backside itchy must try new style mah!

For those new to this, yes, best to use Shutter priority - you will feel more "satisfied" with just the correct amount of exposure.

I have suggestions for those who want to look 'pro' at the Esplanade. Wear a black T-shirt and jeans. Use Nikon 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200 lenses. Clip a name tag on your belt-line. 'Dive' from one end of the stage to another like you never missed a shot. Toss your camera bag around like you don't bother about its contents. Pose like a SWAT about to strike. WAH.... you look damn 'pro' liao!

Uncle Kong is busy with his car, wife and daughters, so cannot come also.

Hi photosynthesie, long time no see, how are you, as KopiOkaya have said busy with my personal and family life.
Partially I don't have a long lens to do stage shooting, I still love my PnS F200EXR but with only 5X zoom.
Still consider getting the Fuji S200EXR with 14.3X and it depends on my general usage.

Well! will see you in the next FUN outings and happy shooting this coming sat.

What about the settings on film simulation ?

In my opinion, film simulation is mainly for tang chiak studio photogaphers who know very well the characteristics of different films and want to reproduce similar results.

I no experience ;) so for me I just leave it at STD or whatever.

If really want to play play with film simulation, sHOOT raw and then can experiment with the Fuji software. I used to play play with that a bit. Since I bought Lightroom, I so long never touch the Fuji software that I even forgot what it is called.

However, KopiOKaya tells me that the Fuji software still gives better results in terms of colour quality. (Correct me if I am wrong).

BTW: NIk software also can play play with film simulation, especially b/w films.

I am surprised so many F.U.N. members don't own a tele lens. For me, if I don't own a tele lens, my shutter count will be very low ;)

Anyway, I have a spare Nikkor 75-300, if anybody wants to rent for the price of one large bowl special handmade yellowtail fishball soup, let me know.

Otherwse, go to rent a 70-300 VR lah... Camera Rental charges $28, others probably around the same price. For that small investment, can sHOOT from Saturday afternoon till Monday 1.30pm, which means can sHOOT two concerts on Saturday and Sunday nights and other things on Sunday morning and afternoon.

You can still make use of the tele lens at the Hort Park the weekends on Sunday to do more GREEN shooting.

There is a Garden Fair cum bazaar over the Park, with connecting white shelter canopy tents for all the exhibitors, quite cooling to move around.

Few big names like 3M, Philips, Acer and some Organic Products were there.
See this Link for more details.

PS: There will be FREE shutter services from HarbourFront MRT station to the Hort ParK.

Yes, you are right. Fujifilm HyperUtility HS-V3 converts colors better. Whereas, Adobe Lightroom 2.5 is better at extracting tonal details. I use both softwares for different applications.

Wah again... forgot how to use HyperUtility liao :( Can only view images, cannot adjust, convert (can, but dunno where the file went to) etc. But from viewing so far, it seems the images all more yellow compared to Lightroom, where images tend to be more magenta.

Maybe that is why KopiOKaya uses a lower WB setting than me. I normally set at 3200, I believe KopiOKaya set slightly lower?

And also why the gold appears more kim. Overall, images seem more lively and yet more natural. Or am I imagining things :-??

Frankly, to unleash the true potential of a FinePix DSLR and its SuperCCD, you must use HyperUtility. Otherwise, you are just harvesting 70% of what your camera has got to offer.

FinePix F200EXR does not require HyperUtility. However, FinePix S200EXR will need it when you shoot in RAF (Fujifilm RAW format).

Photoshop's in-built Adobe Camera Raw will convert RAF files, but the results are similar to that from Lightroom.

Similar provided you use later versions of Photoshop, I believe after CS3.

My Photoshop CS2 the conversion is bleah! When open the image it is very dark and then have to boost exposure a lot before it looks normal. Also, the final file size after conversion is is not the usual Fuji size but 3024 x 2016

The two Topeng pixs, especially, really :thumbsup::thumbsup:

BTW: Can we do a survey how many pixs each of you shoot and how many you keep or delete? Interesting to find out how free or restrained you guys are.

I shot just over 1,000 (approx 1020) and deleted about 500 in first round.
If without the poison VR lens, I sometimes end up deleting 80 to 90 percent :(

This is largely due to grand maestro's keen interest in stage photography, which prompted me to shoot more regularly at the Esplanade. Before this, I just sit down and enjoy the performance.

Only 1,379 ah? I thought would be close to 2,000...

I expected much less actually.

While I was working as a regional correspondence for Sports Illustrated magazine many years ago, I used to shoot more than 1,500 images on film per basketball or football game, which lasted 2 to 3 hours at most.

And you have no blur, spoilt, lousy shots to delete?

Have... But I considered them 'artistically' and 'creatively' blurred, spoilt or lousy shots.

One of Leonardo Da Vinci's discarded lousy sketches (so he called) was sold for hundred thousands of dollars a few years ago. If I become famous one day (just like Leonardo) and somebody discovers my 'artistically' and 'creatively' blurred, spoilt or lousy shots, my future generations do not have to work so hard.
