Any way to counter...:confused1:
Simple...
Hand all your credit cards and ATM cards to your wife for safekeeping and appoint her as CFO. When you have the urge to BBB, just consult your CFO. When she gives you that 'do-you-really-need-it' look, you will probably sian liao.
Then, think about your daughter enrolling into secondary school next month. WAH... the total cost of secondary school books these days is as much as a LX-3, or more.

Rent the lens that u are poisoned and compare the photo taken by it with the photo taken by the manual lens u have...... and post it up for our analysis.
Pls refer to Kopiokaya's thread "Spot the difference contest - cheapo vs poison lens (http://www.sgshoot.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=60)"
I guess it will stopped your BBB virus. After all your manual lens may produce better photo. Or you will ask yourself if it is worth to BBB .. buying the poison lens (10-20x the price) for that 0.1-10% difference.
Right? :coolnod:
Said is easier than done. I will always approach KopiOkaya and Uncle Kong/Bluffname for medicine whenever I suffer from BBB poison.
Thanks

In my opinion, 70-300VR is not "good enough" but the best among the various options you listed, especially for shooting stage performances because:
low light (needs VR)
fast moving subjects (needs auto focus) Topeng was not so fast, wait till you encounter some Japanese or Korean rock bands, or, eg last year's performance of Bali's Ramayana. It's like shooting sports or even tougher because most sports you can anticipate where the person is going, here you cannot.
subjects from far to near (needs zoom). Sometimes the same person moves from back to front of the stage within seconds eg the fire eaters / blowers at recent Indian festival. They eat / blow their fire from the back because of safety reasons and then for the finale, they come up front to eat / blow. You want to keep changing lenses arh?
you sometimes want to get real close to capture the emotion of the performer or, in my case, the hands, and so you need the long reach, at least 300mm. This is where, personally, I prefer the 80-400 VR except that it is heavy, costly etc but if and when I have the money I will BBB this one :) The 80-400 is also slightly slower in focusing, but for me, the extra reach is more important. I find 180 or 200 far too short.
What's the point of getting a prime lens that may be 1% or even 10% sharper if in the end most of your pictures have camera shake or, worse still, you miss your shots because no time to focus, no time to change lens, etc.

worse still, you miss your shots because no time to focus...
This is 100% true. Especially when you try to manual focus a subject some distance away, it is very difficult 'lock-in' focus even when the subject moves slightly. Don't believe me, try manual focus a subject at 200mm. You will know what I meant here.
low light (needs VR)
I recall I was so 'yaya papaya' in the other forum, claiming that I didn't need a VR lens because I could handheld my telephoto lens at 1/8 seconds without camera shake. Let me quote from our dear MM - "I WAS WRONG!" Shooting stage performance at 1/8 seconds with no camera shake is IMPOSSIBLE.

Now you even more "yaya papaya" Talk like MM.
My own experience is that shooting stage performance without VR is possible down to only about 1/30 seconds... but that is still tikam tikam. If lucky, it comes out reasonably sharp, if not lucky, :( all shake and blur. Even some of my pixs at 1/125 got camera shake, especially if the performance is exciting and I kan cheong!
