Welcome to SgShoot! :clap2:

Yes, the FinePix F70EXR is an excellent compact camera. However, it has its pros and cons as well. You may want to contact fellow F.U.N. member and FinePix F70EXR user, Sgsoonhoe. I am sure he is happy to share his experiences with you.

In the meantime, you may want to checkout some samples from this camera here (http://www.sgshoot.com/forums/showthread.php?p=49831#post49831). Likewise, you can visit our Fujifilm F.U.N. blog here (http://fujifilmfun.wordpress.com/).

We will be having our Christmas F.U.N. outing at Orchard Road tomorrow (12/12/09) at 5:30pm. Sgsoonhoe will be attending this outing. If you have few hours to spare in the evening, you may want to join us. You can checkout the details of the outing here (http://www.sgshoot.com/forums/showthread.php?p=49925#post49925).

From your above line, you don't seems to be local (Maybe I am wrong,)

Its fine for a newbie who dont pixel peep and do big prints a lot. I used it mainly for web. The zoom (27-270mm) is a buy factor for me to replace my 3X camera. Another factor is I like the DR and color produced by Fujifilm cameras.

Cons like CA (purple fringe) appearing at wider side of the zoom range (under contrasty condition), battery life on this camera is weak (around 200 per charge), so need to carry spare batteries.

I got it between $400+ at MS Color at AMK.

Overall, I had been shooting more with this compact than my dslr as it is pocketable and always carry it with me.

He PM'ed me just now wanted to know which camera to buy. I replied him that I need to know his budget, goals, objectives and shooting habits first before I can advise him further.

Images from the F70EXR are actually quite noisy compared to F200EXR, which is its "big brother". But you may have already know, the F20EXR is currently out-of-stock in Singapore and its production discontinued. Your next best option is to wait until third-quarter of 2010 for the replacement model to be launched. Otherwise, get an used F200EXR.

When I got my F70EXR last year, I took it for a night spin at a getai near my place to see how it work out. The images were very noisy (smaller censor size than F200EXR) when shot at high ISO. Another problem with this compact is the focus speed in low light, its slow. The IS (Image Stabilisation) dont work very well.

In case if you are keen to see how F70EXR performed in concert like environment, here are some of my samples (from Getai and Esplanade) after LightRoom touchup with Nik Noise Reduction Software (except the last photo which is SOOC).

Getai - MANUAL, ISO=3200, S=1/100s, A=F5.6, FL=45.3mm, No Flash (No crop)

Getai - MANUAL, ISO=3200, S=1/125s, A=F5.5, FL=37.8mm, No Flash (Square crop)
http://i413.photobucket.com/albums/pp220/pbsoonhoe/F70EXR/20090915Getai_0310-Edit.jpg

This is one of the shot taken at Esplanade Outdoor theatre, very low light..

Esplanade - MANUAL, ISO=3200, S=1/125s, A=F5.5, FL=23.9mm, No Flash (Heavy crop)

When there are some decent good light, the whole image don't even need PP..(Straight Out Of Camera)

Esplanade - PROGRAM, ISO=1600, S=1/25s, A=F5.5, FL=23.9mm, No Flash (SOOC)

For tossing, I understand that F11 is ideal.

All cameras are good for tossing.

Amberture calls his tossing method "toasting". So, all cameras are good for "toasting".

F200EXR is still better than F80EXR according to grapevine. But, of course some may disagree. Wait for the upgrade to F200EXR lor.

F80EXR is the upgrade of F70EXR with the same sensor size. FujiFilm packed 2MP more to make it a 12MP cam with HD video (could be VGA interpolation) and a bigger LCD screen.

F300EXR, which should available later this year is the long awaited upgrade to F200EXR with a bigger sensor, could be a better choice.

Have you considered getting a f200 second hand? Or u can try your luck to get 1 in Malaysia, Indonesia. I have Yet to play with f80, so I cannot comment on it. Is f 80 available now?

If it is such an urgency, you can settle for a new f70 taking into consideration of pro and cons.

F80 could cost around $450- 530. I am not sure it f70 is still b available at $ 339?

If there is such an urgency and u cannot decide, furthermore we cannot comment at f80 , pls consider borrowing a camera from your friend and wait till next pc show in June 10. U can decide later.

Hope my info helps.

Cheers

I have the privilege to be one of the first people in Singapore to "play" with the F80EXR back in February. Other than the 2 extra MP and HD video Fujifilm had added, it is basically the same camera as F70/72EXR. Both using the same lens and sensor. Noise level is relatively high compared to F200EXR.

If you can wait another 3-4 months more, F300EXR will be a better choice. But if you insist on buying the F80EXR now, just don't complain about the image quality on the forum later, saying we never told you.

What ISO are you shooting with? The F200EXR can shoot as high as ISO 1,600 and still looks good. At ISO 400 or below, the noise is on-par with some DSLRs.

In general, try not to use the EXR setting in AUTO mode. I suggest using P, A or S mode.

I basically use the P mode, iso 400 auto, DR auto, and image size M 4:3. Any other settings to touch on? please advise

Oh, one more thing to consider. When using Fujifilm cameras (all models), never use the LCD screen as your guide or reference. Unlike most other camera brands, the "WOW-factor" is AFTER you have loaded your images into your computer and you view them on your computer monitor. Therefore, it may look grainy on the camera's LCD screen but in reality, it may not be.

I doubt so. Images from the F200EXR are still quite "clean" at ISO 1,600. (Although still cannot match those from the F31fd.)
