Time to dig out your spiders, butts, orchids, lotuses and other photos of animals and plants.

The National Parks Board had earlier announced a photo contest with vague prizes. But now, it has been revealed that the Top Prize is $6,000 cash plus 4D/3N stay for two at Banyan Tree resort in the Maldives. In addition there are five merit prizes worth $3000 each.

Deadline is 28 March. Details here. (http://www.nparks.gov.sg/cms/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=187&Itemid=167)

Good Luck to all, especially Spiderman Bro Excelglsi. You "must" take part in this, then can buy everyone sharkfin, abalone and fatt choy lunch, with Naughty G for dessert.

If you don't like put my name and share the prize

This must be coincidence / serendipity! I went downstairs buy fruits, drink tea etc and just thinking to PM you to remind you of this. I thinking, especially your pix of ants and one of some insect with 2 legs up. Those are award-winning standard.

And I am sure you can find two more, if not I find for you. Just hope you have the large files. If not, KopiOKaya to the rescue.

Bro Ex

#1 and #2 hard fight, both excellent but no point to submit both since same subject. My personal inclination is towards #2, even though got a slightly distracting strip on the left, but that adds interest to the composition. #1 is "cleaner" composition but the background is a bit too bright and distracting.

#3 definitely  but needs a bit pp to give the pix more punch.

The rest not award-winning standard, although #7 is rather artistic and intersting. It might do well in a more "arty" composition or the Water through my lens composition which, unfortunately, closed liao.

I believe you do have better pixs  Where is the one with dunno what insect two legs in the air? The spider wiping eyes is good too and generally you have many excellent spiders. You got lah! Good to dig out two more possible entries.

I think so but WAH.... you have so many others far better than this. eg #25 on the site you listed here and many many on the Alpha site. How to know which one you have big files?

Your problem is NOT that you don't take good pictures. You have great pictures. Your only small "problem" is that you dunno how to select :knock1:

go for snail pic. vibrant colours. overall very nice.

Looks like the snail is unanimous choice :clap2: But make sure you also submit the ants. That one got action and drama, which is rare in a macro shot. Got good composition too. And colours can be made more vibrant. I can help or ask KopiOKaya, he more pp kungfu.

BTW: Need to submit 8R prints. I suggest print at Shalom at Bras Basah Complex. Cheap and good.

I saw ur work... Very nice...hehe Also wish u luck.

Thanks Bro. By way of sharing, here are my four entries. Very different from Excelglsi's exotic spiders, snail and ants.

Lotus yin yang My all-time favourite lotus photo, taken very soon after I bought my S5 Pro (but recently changed the title). You all know this from IT Show:

http://www.photographs-of-hands.com/1000/lotus-yy.jpg

--------

Light. Water. Flowers. Taken through a water wall outside a factory in Jurong, when I was on assignment to write about some precision engineering company for an aerospace magazine. I must thank Excelglsi for this. I totally forgot about this pix, then he commented on it on JPG magazine and I thought, "Hey, this can enter for the contest."

http://www.photographs-of-hands.com/1000/light.water.flowers.jpg

-------

Graffiti Tree: Why the willow weeps! KopiOKaya may remember I had a pix of the same tree taken long ago but showing only the trunk with the graffiti. I wanted to show the leaves and the tree as well but my earlier shots were not good. I went back THREE times to re-shoot this tree, final time with Amberture who kindly loaned me his "poison" 11-16 lens. This version the best of all. With my 18-70, I could only go about 3/4 way up the pix, missing out completely the part of the trunk that turns to the right. Thanks, NewPhew! Rabbit sharks fins and more for you if I win (but only with this, ha ha!)

http://www.photographs-of-hands.com/1000/willow-weeps.jpg

--------

THE END (of biodiversity) Shot just downstairs of my AMK flat. of a bird kena culled a few days earlier. This is my most controversial entry and was a last minute decision to include. After I turned the pix to b/w and pp a bit, I rather like it (altho a friend says it is ordinary).

Judges probably looking for pretty pixs of spiders. In fact, when I went to print at Shalom, Mr Leong asked what competition I was taking part in and when I said National Parks, he asked: "Spiders ah?" See how they react to this, ha ha!

Thanks for your comments excelglsi. My photos are nowhere compared to yours. As I have said, I personally like this as I feel a greater sense of mystic from this pic compared to the second one. As there should be many submissions of insects, you really have to find a pic with a greater feel to stand a better chance - for me, this is it.

Something like this ok for maybe consolation prize  BUT... hey you still have a few days to shoot, closing is Sunday. If you go walk around with a specific thing in mind, you will get some pretty good shots. This was my experience when I did my leaves series sometime back, just walk around my neighbourhood.

Otherwise aim for something different like plants in shopping centres or other areas in the city. No need to go into the forest! Good luck!

Eh? How come your version of this pix the background looks like shot with "big hole" lens? Here is my version after your suggested tonal contrast treatment - as mentioned, I did very little tonal contrast:

Kind of Blue

Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" is my all-time favorite jazz album. In fact, I own 4 copies - normal CD, normal CD + DVD video (50th anniversary edition), SACD and DVD-Audio.

When I feel the blues coming, "Kind of Blue" is the best remedy.

Folks... if you want to purchase a copy, I highly recommend buying the original US pressing by Sony/Columbia from Borders. Only $18.95.

Here are my entries, but was in a rush and printed the wrong photo with the family by the koi pond.

I should have chosen the other two photos and I prefer the one with the whole family.

Thank you KopiOkaya for directing me to the BiodiverCity to deliver my photos.

Without any direction I think not everyone can find the location of the BiodiverCity.

While on my way back I discovered a very prehistoric Garden next to the
BiodiverCity and here is one of the photo of the garden.

The Fuji high dynamic range of DR800 was used in this well lighted photo.

I don't even have the time to visit COLA. I already have three good lucks. Firstly, the contest was extended by 2 weeks due to "overwhelming" response. Secondly, GGM was free, kind and willing to help me out on the post processing after accompanying me for the shoot. Thirdly, Mr Teo from Shalom was kind enough to make an exception to rush the printing for me - if I was late for another 30 mins, it would have been a different story.

I went to the opening of the BiodiverCity Photo Exhibition this morning.
The standard of the Photo are very high and most of the winning pictures are action shots.

My Wild Mushroom photo was selected for exhibition. Over 2,200 entries, 700 Photographers from both the open and school category.

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt215/andikong/Evolution%20Garden/WildMushroom2272.jpg

The grand prize winner in the open category.

Just to test your judgement of these two bird action photos and pick a winner. See if you can match the judge final decision.

Yes! all the winning pictures was taken in Singapore and that was confirmed by the minister during the opening ceremony.

That winning shots was taken at the Sungei Buloh natural reserve, the photographer was there for quite a number of times just to get the shot.

The Kingfisher was taken at the Botanic garden.

First, congrats again Andi, your mushroom pix was the best of the lot

As for white eagle, I disagree. I feel the Kingfisher is more dramatic and unusual, including the composition with bird almost flying out of the pix. Eagle is more classic and conservative pix, but excellent pix nonetheless.

Mantis catching a bug should be more interesting IMHO. The mantis is so fast, even the fly does not stand a chance. Other things I can think of is snake striking prey, tiger whacking prey with its paws and monkeys jumping around and fighting. Mantis fist, snake fist, tiger fist and monkey fist.

The composition, the lighting, the water splashes and the reflections on the water surface.

The Kingfisher photo water splashes was rather untidy and lack sharpness when you see it in real picture.

I have seen you Langkawi photo over the other forum quite sometimes ago, nice pictorial photo recorded.

I have noticed all those too for the white eagle shot. But, I don't like the white eagle shot as much as it is flying away from me. The prey is more clearly visible for the kingfisher shot and it seems to be rarer to see a kingfisher catching a fish in Singapore, especially in Botanic Gardens of all places.

Thank you bro bluffname for the compliment.

As for the Kingfisher photo, in real life it was not well in focus and the birdie is not very sharp in the
enlargement (size: 100cm x 80cm) as compare with the white eagle shot.

I think it is well worth to go down and see all the 30 accepted entries for the open section especially the first few winning shots.

I feel that the judges are looking for more than just composition, lighting and sharpness. Capturing the moment that suits the theme is the key here.

From an artistic perspective, yes, the eagle picture is better. Nonetheless, the kingfisher picture is attention grabbing. It does make you want to look at it again.
