1) You are trying to take portraiture outdoor on a sunny day. The sunlight cast a shadow on the opposite side of the subject’s face. The metering reading for key light is f/11 at 1/250 sec. How to achieve the 1:4 lighting ratio?

2) trying to take environmental portraiture at night, a popular shopping mall with beautiful decorative lights as background. The ambient reading is f5.6 at 1/30sec. Subjects stand at a distance from the background in order to include the shopping mall. I have to flash the subjects with a flashlight, as the available light is too dim for exposure. How do I balance with my flashlight in term of its light intensity and colour balance?

Use diffusing panels to block some of the sunlight. For 1:4 light ratio, the shadow is 2 stops from the key.

With a Nikon Speedlight, use TTL BL, plus warm color gel. Use ISO 640 or higher if handheld.

I have been doing photography for about a year now and love to be outdoors in the natural light. But its hard to do that when its winter out so I have to move it indoors. And I seem to have issues with indoor lighting. I cant seem to get it balanced or have enough of it. I have to umbrella lights that I use. and I have a large soft box but I don't ever use it. What can I do differently? Its hard to photograph children at low settings because they are always moving, but if i increase my settings, i never have enough light. what am i doing wrong? or what do i need to make it better? thanks for your help
