Finally, I mustered my courage and bought the lens this afternoon after many months of resistance and hesitation.

Here is a picture of one of my tuition students. Being camera-shy, he was trying to "escape" from me when I photographed him. He went hiding behind a void deck pillar, scaling over an iron railing, when I took this shot (he was running away from me!).

You thinking of mi ah? No problems. I waiting for rumoured, new, improved 120-450 maybe with "lightning focus" and also waiting for CPF or some other windfall. The longer the wait, the greater the song :happy1:

If last time I did not wait, I would have bought the Sony A100 or Pentax K10D liao! Good thing I waited for Fuji S5 Pro. not only great camera but great F.U.N. buddies too. This was really unexpected bonus!

Meanwhile, congrats to KopiOKaya. Tomorrow his father's birthday, today he buy himself present :cheer:

That was a close shave. For me, I also don't know why I suddenly rushed down to grab the S5Pro one afternoon in Jan 09. Moreover, I had never even heard of the shop before and never used a DSLR before that. I guess it is all fated. ;)

Bro KopiOkaya, how I wish i can follow u this morning. I met Uncle. But he did not tell me about your poison lens.

I was actually missing the reach when I took the photo last Friday and was also ponder upon the 80-400. But I guess I should stay put with my 70-300 and I think 80-400 is too heavy for me.

Also..... happy Birthday to your daddy. Send my birthday wishes to him.

A 400mm lens on a cropped sensor is still too short for birding. For budget, I suggest you buy the Sigma 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM. OP has one used for sale now.

GM, I think 600-800mm lens is needed to get uptight birdie shots. But, 50-500mm sounds mind boggling. Can shoot portraits, Esplanade events and normal birds.

KopiOkaya

normal birds.

Got abnormal birds meh? Anyway, you are talking to "BigBird17" here. His friends should be as big as he is, so a Sigma 50-500mm is more than good enough.

Furthermore, he doesn't have a banker's budget, so better stick to an used Sigma 50-500 which costs only S$1,300 (still can bargain more) at OP.

WAH... Just found out from Nikon website that the designer of Super Poison, Mr. Masayuki Aoki, passed away shortly after the lens was put on the market in 2000.

Profile of Mr. Masayuki Aoki (from Nikon website):
Mr. Aoki was the picture of honesty. He had a strong moral sense, hating anything that is not fair. We had become friends also privately, and sometimes I had been surprised at finding that he had many interests. He had a special appreciation of music, especially among many of them. He listened to various types of music, from songs of idols in the Showa period (1926-1989) to classical music. “Did Mr. Aoki go to a concert of that idol singer? Is he a groupie of the singer?” His concern about pop stars became a topic of conversation among us. The gap between the usual character of Mr. Aoki and his eager interest in idol singers surprised us. He was also good at magic tricks and he demonstrated his expertise with sleight of hand during employee trips. Mr. Aoki’s life was short, but he made the most of it, I’m sure. Mr. Aoki will keep living on among us through his achievements.

In honor of Mr Masayuki Aoki, we shall use his creation to photograph music concerts and art performances to justify his passion.

Wah I need to stay away from this thread. I'm missing 85, 300 and 400mm from my collection but I know I don't need it.... yet. :knock1:

Bro kaixiang, I bet you are mainly a landscape and street shooter. I was like you in the past mistakenly thinking that I was covered by my Tokina 11-16mm and Nikkor 16-85mm lenses. But, when I look at my event shots, especially stage event shots, I just need to take 2 or 3 shots and can go home already, as all the pics will look similar and forgettable. 85mm to 400mm is the most important range for me now, as I need to isolate my subjects and to create relaxing pics.

Based on GM's sharpness test, I can say that this lens is sharper if not as sharp as any prime or zoom Nikkor lenses out there for focal range from 80mm to 400mm in daylight. Generally, you just need another Tokina 11-16mm (if necessary) and 16-85mm VR2 and you are covered from 11mm to 400mm sharp sharp all the way. You can sell your other lenses away through the secondary market if you will, unless you have the means to keep other lenses to play play.

GGM said that picture quality of 80-400 is great at night too.

I'm actually covered from 24-180mm already except for the 80-90mm 'hole'. I don't think I am actually lacking much at the moment but I imagine the 11-16 would probably be more useful than a 80-400 although I should just spend less money and take more photos for now

Agree, spend less shoot more

Not everyone needs to go to 400mm, but in my opinion a 70-300 will be quite useful, certainly much more useful than an 11-16. Superwide angle is very specialised and most people I know who own the lens very seldom use it. Some have since sold off their super wide angles.

The main advantage of superwide angle is not so much to take in more of the scene, but to use its ability to exaggerated certain parts of it by going very close. And this is not always possible to do.

It depends on your shooting style. For me, I have long been denying the fact that I am an uptight person until one day my university professor told me: "Larry, your strength is in your up-close images." From then on, I stayed away from my former wide-angle lens - the Tokina AT-X Pro 28-70mm f2.8-2.6, and focused on my former telephoto lens - the Nikon 80-200 f2.8 ED AF-D. I was still shooting film then. I began to develop my own style from there.

Today, I am shooting even more up-close than before (thanks to Bluffname who has helped me rediscover my strength).

I'm not much of a wide angle person also. That's why I stopped at 24mm. Back when I started with the 18-55mm kit lens I realised that I never used 18mm much. For some strange reason, currently I like 105mm for all sorts of things best.

I'm not much of a macro person also. The idea of going out to find bugs is weird for me. I don't even know where to start. Haha. I have done macro like 2-3 times only. Once when everyone caught money macro virus from Andikong and once when I found a dead bug at home:

Being typical "kiasu" Singaporeans, a few Fujifilm F.U.N. members (myself included) went to Esplanade Outdoor Theatre at about 6:30pm last Saturday. The "Fires of Eden" performance was supposed to start at 7:30pm, so we were exactly one hour early.

Nothing to do while resting on our "choapped" seats, we started photographing our surroundings. Facing the Merlion Park, Bluffname and I started to shoot the "overly-photographed" mascot with our Super Poisons. I pointed out to him that we could see "faces" in our photos very clearly even from here (we are at least 300m across the bay). Bluffname replied "yes, faces with 2 eyes and 1 nose."

I dug-up one of those photos and I could see more than just faces with 2 eyes and 1 nose.

More than just 2 eyes and 1 nose

Ha ha! You may find that 400, or even 500 or 600, is still "a bit short for birds". In any case, the 80-400 comes with my highest recommendations. Apart from KopiOKaya, some other bro on this forum bought recently and I believe he will be extremely pleased with it. Me, I have been using rented and borrowed versions until I have enough money to buy my own.

After months of thinking and thinking and thinking, I finally decided to bite the bullet and bought an 80-400VR late this afternoon from P&G @ Adelphi. I thank Bro KopiOkaya for helping me test the lens this morning. This piece of poison will help me shoot tighter than tight. Now, I must really improve on my photography.

Here is my virgin shot using S5 Pro with this lens. I was surprised that the words "Made In Germany" on my lens filter actually showed up, as I was just aiming at one of my lenses from the furthest end of my bedroom casually and the words are actually very small. I definitely can't see any of the words from that distance.
EXIF data are:

500-600 a bit too much for me. I am not a fan of chasing down bird or waiting for them to appear. More of a wah! I see a nice bird, take out camera and hope the bird don't fly off type. That place is perfect for that since the birds go there eat banana everyday.

After cropping, I can get this on the 180mm:

Why thank me? Is it because I poisoned a lot of people and made them flushed their hard-earn money down the drain?

It is not Bro Kopi's fault. I could have been the first FUNee to buy this lens in Xiamen, China if I had brought enough money. I went to the shop twice to view the lens.

Before that, I had researched this lens way before I joined the FUN group but bought the 70-200 instead.

I could have opted to wait till next year to buy this lens, but this lens is not in production and the lens may not be there next year when I visit Xiamen again. I am quite sure that it won't be there next year, as China people are willing to spend money on quality items too. I witnessed a China guy buying a D3s using one thick stack of RMB. He also bought SB900, filters, memory card, batteries, 85f1.4, 24-70 and a big ThinkTank bag. No questions was asked. That guy just checked the equipment superficially, paid and go - all within 10 mins.

To put it simply, 70-200 is my essential lens and 80-400 is the icing on the cake. Good lenses retain their value well. It is on this notion that I prefer to buy rather than to rent lenses.

My first impression of the poison lens after its first Esplanade is that:
1) This lens can focus quite fast and sure under low light. Frankly, I am impressed with its speed. Surprisingly, if sun glare is too strong, lens tends to hunt a bit - probably due to lack of contrast.
2) If I set camera at aperture priority, shutter speed seems to be erratic and on the low side, thus the motion blur for action shots.
3) The pictures are quite bright for Esplanade shoots if camera is set at aperture priority - oftentimes no need to be so bright. Most of the time, I need to underexpose shots by -1EV or more and add some black clipping for shots to be of similar brightness as the sifus. This means that if I use set camera to manual, I can actually use a much higher shutter speed and less motion blur. Yesterday, I tried manual at the lotus pond in AMK and I can achieve all kinds of lotuses, namely, night, morning, afternoon, relaxing, vibrant, just using manual mode.
4) Just to share, this is a very capable lens. I am loving it more and more everyday.

WAH you have energy to go lotus pond again ah! Anyway, manual is the way to go, not just for this lens but, in my opinion, for all lenses, especially in difficult lighting situations.

Didn't your pixs become too bright with aperture priority using your "lightning" lens? Maybe because of "big hole" you did not end up with camera shake but I am sure many shots came out brighter than necessary? No?

Last time, I took it for granted and used aperture priority with lightning lens, as shutter speed is quite fast. Then, I found that I need to PP pictures big time, as photos tend to be overly bright and colour earratic under what I term as disco light shooting condition at Esplanade. Camera shake is not a problem to me. I demonstrated to selim how a newbie like me gets sharp image at 1/6s and lower at 400mm and a heavier camera setup like mine (with battery grip, 2 batteries, poison lens with tripod mount) just by changing the way we sit (using legs as monopod). At first he was worried about camera shake at 400mm.

I use the same position as well, except that if I need extra stability, I will use my forehead as an additional camera rest (I demonstrated this to Bluffname before). In this position, I can shoot as low as 1/4 seconds without camera shake (with VR switched on).

Shooting at Esplanade really makes us "steady-sHOOTers".

Just a simple calculation buying on-line from HK's Tin Cheung..

Lens HK$10815.00 = S$1914.75
Shipping HK$253.00 = S$44.79
Customs (7%GST) = S$134.03

Total = S$2093.57

Near to DD Electronics price, any other cheaper HK retailer ?

It depends on how much we trust that person. If that person is a photographer and a close-friend or relative, then I don't see any issue.

By right... if somebody offered higher than $1400 the seller is doing you a favour in case you really want the lens and dun mind top up a bit.
