Welcome to the Sounds & Colours: Chopin in Singapore Photography Competition 2010
Still 200 years after his birth, the music of Chopin, leaves its traces through the musicians performing it, the places where it is performed and in the emotions of the listeners may this be in Poland or Singapore.
In 2010, the Chopin year is celebrated worldwide with events ranging from exhibitions, film performances or concerts. The Polish Embassy in Singapore and Halina & Miroslaw Pienkowski are proud to organize as one of the many events held in Singapore, a Photography competition with the aim to further introduce to Singaporeans the music of Chopin and the colourful emotions it sparks in its listeners and admirers.
Theme: Capture, in a photograph, a scene that encapsulates the colourful emotions Chopin’s music sparks in our city, Singapore.
1st Prize - SGD 3000
2nd Prize - SGD 2000
3rd Prize - SGD 1000
The Photographic Society of Singapore, as one of the organizers of the competition, lends its long-standing expertise in the photography field to ensure all photographs are judged by experts in their field and the best photographs to be chosen as winners.
Singapore Botanical Gardens, where the Chopin Monument in Singapore has been unveiled in 2008, is the venue sponsor of the “Sounds & Colours: Chopin in Singapore” Photography competition. The final ceremony will be held in the Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage in conjunction with a concert of Chopin’s music by talented young musicians. Furthermore the best photographs will be displayed in an exhibition at the visitor centre of the Singapore Botanical Gardens.

This Yundi Li is not bad lah - for shooting I meant. Lots of actions. Compared to the true maestros, his playing is still "immature" - too rush. Thus, lacks refinement. This guy is like a Ferrari compared, to say Arthur Rubinstien, who is like an old Rolls Royce.

Étude Op. 10, No. 5 (Chopin)
Étude Op. 10, No. 5, in G-flat major, also known as the Black Key (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89tude_Op._10,_No._5_%28Chopin%29) Étude, is a solo piano work composed by Frédéric Chopin in 1830. This work is characteristic for the arpeggios played with the right hand, almost exclusively on black keys except in measure 66, where Chopin wrote an F-natural, the only white key for the right hand throughout the entire piece. The left hand plays the melody, with mostly chords and octaves, while the right hand accompanies with quick triplets on black keys.
Étude Op. 25, No. 5 (Chopin)
Étude Op. 25, No. 5, in E minor, is an étude composed by Frédéric Chopin in 1837. Marking a serious departure in the expected technique developed by études, Chopin wrote this étude with a series of quick minor seconds that produce slightly dissonant sounds. The effect has earned the étude the nickname "Wrong Note (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89tude_Op._25,_No._5_%28Chopin%29)".
Étude Op. 25, No. 11 (Chopin)
Étude Op. 25, No. 11, also known as the 'Winter Wind (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89tude_Op._25,_No._11_%28Chopin%29)', is a solo piano work composed by Frédéric Chopin in 1836. It was first published along with the other études in opus 25 in 1837, in France, Germany, and England. The first French edition indicates a common time time signature, but the manuscript and the first German edition both feature cut time.[1] The first four bars that characterize the melody were added just before publication at the advice of Charles A. Hoffmann, a friend.

Thanks for a nice find, Andi. It's not one of Chopin's more famous pieces, but beautiful music!
I was at the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library (National Library) yesterday researching on Frédéric Chopin and his music. Read through several books, biographies and periodicals. I even bought a CD with a small collection of Chopin's more popular music. I have decided to focus on the theme "Fantaisie".
After watch through several versions of Chopin's Fantaisie-Impromptu in C-sharp minor, Op. posth. 66 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantaisie-Impromptu), Ernest (Not Yingbin1005's son. This Ernest is Bluffname's hi-fi friend and record shop owner) is right. Yundi Li's playing is, by far, the most mechanical and "most hurried" of all. Not much feeling to this masterpiece. Although masterpiece it may be, Chopin actually hated it so much that he was going to have the manuscript destroyed until George Sand (Chopin's mistress) took it from him and hid it.
The best playing of all comes from Horowitz.
x93pwAvUkAA
Now, compared it to Yundi Li's play.

No denial, the "Ang Moh" is better.

:"someone playing with piano and the background has color, water with merlion as background etc"
ahahahahaha..... :knock1:

That is how most beginners will interpret it anyway. Don't feel despair and think harder. :coolnod: You must understand that Chopin's music is very, very broad (but all classified under Romantism). Narrow it down to a single theme. It is easier to brainstorm this way.
But first of all, I strongly suggest that you listen to some of Frédéric Chopin's music before you start (no need to buy a CD, just listen from Youtube can liao). Get a feel of his music and what kind of musician he is.

These are different genres of classical music. Just like in photography, there are landscape, portraiture, macro, architecture, etc...
"Fantaisie" is just a name given by Chopin for his piano composition. There is no specific genre. Impromptu in music simply means a short composition performed in an offhand or extemporized style.

Nope... I suggest that you start by choosing a music from Chopin which you are attached to. A music piece that you are very fond of and have very good impression of it. Choose carefully as this will be YOUR targeted theme.
For example, if you are going to photograph something about Michael Jackson's song, say "Black and White", so you will probably emphasize on images that depict the colors or tones of black and white.

"instrumental ballade, piano sonata, mazurka, waltz, nocturne, polonaise, étude, impromptu and prélude."
all these are his WORK LIST???
Ballade = song / music with story, or so I thought but I the long, the one is ballad! It is actually a form of poetry with three verses, each verse has eight stanzas or lines.
Mazuka = Polish folk dance with three beats but lively feel, same same like waltz which need not be lively
Waltz = pom chet chet, pom chet chet ie dance music with three beats, like Englebert Humperdink's The Last Waltz
Nocturne = music with night time mood
Polonaise = is slow Polish dance with three beats, like slow waltz: poooom.... chet.... chet....
Etude = study - the sort of difficult music that makes music students practise until seow
Impromptu = unplanned lor, like spontaneous, like Bro-Ex's pix of the boy at fountain with bs exposed
Prelude = what you do before the real act, ahem, ahem!
And yes, Chopin wrote many different types of music, including, not mentioned above..
Concerto = a "show off" piece of music, usually for a soloist and with orchestra accompaniment and usually with three movements (not = motions ) but in layperson's language, three parts, and usually fast, slow, fast. Here is the second movement / part of Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 - which he actually wrote after Piano Concerto No. 2, but this one kena published first so kena called No. 1. Complicated arh!
I studied a bit of music, but apart from Waltz, most other terms I had to check Wikipedia!
