Singapore's Meteorological Services Division says an earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter Scale struck Padang, Indonesia at about 11.50am.

The epicentre is 50 kilometres north-northeast of Padang, on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia AND some 430 kilometres south-west of Singapore.

Tremors were also felt in many parts of Singapore.

Callers to the MediaCorp News Hotline say they felt tremors in areas such as Beach Road, Jalan Besar, Robinson Road and Toa Payoh.

Some buildings, like the Concourse at Beach Road, Capital Square and Centennial Tower in the city, and even Ngee Ann Polytechnic in Clementi, were evacuated.

Witnesses say several tall buildings in the central business district swayed slightly.

I just went to SGX Centre 2. The lady told me other building have glasses shattered due to the second tremours. She told me the management decided to cease all work due to safety precautious.

i think u never really experince earthquake b4 tat why u didn't feel nothing wrong.

when i was in taiwan the biggest earthquake shake us in the middle of the nite i tot someone shake my bed, i scold my mate, then i realise that it was Earthquake and we go back to sleep lol in the morning my officers say in the middle of taiwan it struck lucky the building didnt drop on us if not i sleep forever

Here's my account of the incident, i was working at 10 floor somewhere near ocbc bank, at 11:50am March 6, i felt my chair, table and laptop moving.. i then heard the tweaking sounds from the curtain binders and office door.. i looked at colleague and he looked at me in daze.. we then ran out to the staircase like nobody business.. when we reached the lobby.. scores of people standing in the streets in the CBD area.. as it as 12:30noon.. i head for lunch instead.. and came back around 2pm... and again i saw people coming down in frightening faces.. i asked around and was told a 2nd earthquake came.. so guess what ? who dare to go up and continue work ? i head for some coffee and came back around 2:30pm

thoughts ran thru my mind.. seems that the quakes are getting nearer and stronger to Singapore these few years.. i prayed that this country will be protected... we just cannot afford to be shaken loh.

the feeling is exactly like what u feel when MRT train is moving.. :D but.. fear and shock came in when u did not expect it in a fixed building... u will think a bomb or 911 has happened.:o
