Never use any petroleum-based solvent such as Zippo or Ronsonol. You will harm the emulsion. :knock1:
What is wrong with your negatives? Why do you need to clean them?

But how dirty is "dirty"? Different people has got different tolerance for dirt. Some people clean negatives because they are paranoid... a fingerprint is also considered "dirt" to them.
Like an optical lens or a digital image sensor, you don't clean a negative unless absolutely necessary.

Precisely... A few drops of Kodak Photo-Flo or Iford Ilfotol (both are wetting agents) in a basin of water will usually does the trick.
Submerge film into the basin.
Agitate gently for about 30 seconds.
Use a soft sponge or between fingers to squeegee down the film. Be careful, wet film is easily scratched.
Attach film to a clothespins or film clips. Hang dry at a dust-free place.

You can buy it from either Ruby Photo or Fei Fei.
The basic ingredients of Kodak Photo-Flo are distilled water, ethylene glycol and p-tert-octylphenoxy polyethoxyethyl alcohol.
An alternative is to use a combination of 1 drop of MaMa Lemon dishwashing detergent (use regular MaMa Lemon only), 1 ml of 70% isopropyl alchohol and 10 ml of distilled water. It will work the same as Photo-Flo. Just don't use too much detergent or else it will leave a layer of residue.
