Hi, I am using a Nikon D5100, from the advise from all the sifu here in this forum, I will like to say a Big thank you for all the advise.

I have try night scenery with
1) the preset mode
2) the speed priority mode
3) delay of flash to hve a the light streak effect
All thanks for the advise from this forum

But tonight I was a bit frustarted , while I try to take a picture of my daughter at marina barrage with the Singapore flyer in the back ground.

1st I set to Night portrait preset, focus on the face of my daughter
my shutter did not open think it is out focus or what i look through the view finder it say subject too dark, so on the flash light. still did not work
1) I notice the meter in the view finder is on the extreme right try adjusting the speed, still the meter did not move

2) switch to Speed priority , same thing, :confused1:
but sometime it can, but picture turn out to be my daughter face was too bright

3) try adjusting aperture it did not move either but sometime it can, if i aim further toward the back ground

4) try adjusting the focus mode to be single and centre did not work also

But when i try aim toward the scenery there is no issue.

But I have no issue in shooting in broad daylight indoor

Please help

2nd question
1) How to switch to Bulb time for the shutter to release the flash when my finger release? for a Nikon D5100? I cannot find in manual

i've never tried any of the presets so not sure how the night portrait setting works. for night shots i usually use Manual mode.

what you can try is this.

1. mount camera on tripod
2. set camera to Manual mode
3. turn on flash
4. set aperture to say f/3.5
5. set shutter speed to maybe 1/15 secs
6. focus on your daughter's face and ask her not to move
7. take the pic

adjust shutter speed as desired depending on how bright you want the background to be.

the cam need to be in Manual mode in order to set Bulb. turn the shutter speed in the direction of the slowest speeds until you see BuLB. it will be the one after 30s. you can find this on page 53 of the instruction booklet.
