Apologies for my naivity, if any. Why are photographic courses so expensive? Why can't there be an SIG (special interest group) whereby members learn from each other, share knowledge, collect a nominal fee for admin purposes?

I am just wondering ... :)

Expensive is in relative.

More oft than not, one is looking at a photo course chock with materials, an experienced instructor to boot AND practical shooting sessions where everyone is judged by a single experienced instructor on equal grounds (regardless of their former experiences).

A SIG is workable, can be worked out only on the assumption that there's no politics and ego-boost sessions involved. And to add on, for a really new chap to photography, a SIG may serve to either generate or kill his interest outright. We all keep saying that, "Its always those few things - Aperture, Shutter, ISO", but think about it, would members throwing ideas and knowledge around in a SIG would have full dedication attention on the weaker members?

That's what a dedicated instructor's for.

More oft than not, this SIG thingy, I end up seeing things like ppl start putting other ppl down for the sake of it and to boost their own standing in the clique. No, this SIG involved is not involved in Photography BTW.

Hello Saymell,

Welcome to the forums.

To address your first question, the fees that I believe you are refering to are what you see posted here in these forums. These are photography courses conducted by professionals aimed to equip their students with the knowledge and skills to take their level of photography from the very basic all the way up to the professional level.

The instructors themselves are all full time professional photographers specializing in different fields of commercial photograpgy, fully competent to provide guidiance to the different needs of their students and advice as needed.

I have attended a couple of courses conducted in SLCC and based on my expirence with the instructors and the way they present their material, I can say it was money well spent. Their prices are fair, in IMHO.

Regarding SIG, in fact there are serveral in the forums.
These are groups that consist of people with similar photographic interests, who plan and do shoots together. The primary objective of such groups will be to SHOOT. Information is exchanged, Ideas taught up and discussed and the necc. costs split evenly which might incurr from hiring make up artists, models, getting props, transportation etc. Depending on the nature of the shoot. Every member of the SIG a contributing member, to make the idea of a SIG meaningfull. In a nutshell, to experiment on ideas.

So if your interest is to sign up for some courses with SLCC, I fully recommend them. If instead you are looking for kakhis to form a SIG, do post some photos and I am sure you will get some good contacts from those who reply.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Hello my dear friend, of cos you can exchange, learn from each other or share knowledge with any other photography friends or members here. But you will have to take time to try and try and try! It maybe will need some times for you (it will depend on how fast you can learn), maybe 2 months, 3 months, 4 months.........?

Last time ppl say money can't buy time. Now we can buy times! You just spend $210 to get all the knowledges by only 1 month's time! More over we also need $ to pay rental and income tax want! Others wise you will not see us on next month liao!

If you really have $$ problem then don't worry, you can post your pictures in this forum, here also a lot of photographers. I think they also don't mind to share they knowledge with you but as what I say it will take longer time la!

Anyway very welcome you to sgshoot forum!

Anything can be free; nothing can be free. It's a rule of relativity.

We can have a free meal at a temple, but we ca'nt have a free vegetarian dish at the hawker centre. We can drink from the tap through the faucet of the toilet basin, yet we choose to pay $1.20 for a bottle of "water." In photography, we can learn by trial and error on our own accord without paying a fee, but we can also pay a fee to acclerate the learning curve through a formal lesson and with thought provoking Q&A.

To those with a willing heart, learning can be fruitful within a certain environment. To those to shut their hearts and cluttered thier minds with worries and comparisons, learning would probably not go very very far.

May those who seek will eventually find what they are opened to receive. There is no one answer to operate PASM.

I hope maybe some of us here can form a small group and share knowledge on photography, photoshop technics and equipment.

Its free most importantly. I think going for photography course would be great.. But for hobbists such as me... its abit expensive. :o

So hope SGshoot can form a small interest group and organize shoots or kopi session for all to learn and share :)
