Zero WB Filter

1) Introduction

We recommend that users are well aware of how to set Custom White Balance referring the camera manual before using Zero WB Filter.

The basic information of how to use and apply White Balance Filter is stated below.
Zero WB Filter will help you to create the color image file equal to an 18% gray card.

2) Custom White Balance

Custom White Balance set is used as a way of color compensation to obtain a color balance more correct than AUTO white balance that is provided by the manufacturer.

Using Custom White Balance, users can properly distribute red, green, and blue RGB to artificially create neutral gray. In other words, this product help users to realize a correct color among the numerously diverse color casts that a camera catches.

After Custom White Balance is set, the camera will distribute the same amount of red, green, and blue color on any picture (under the same source of light) that a user has taken to realize the correct color balance. Then, users can continue photographing with the same user's setting value.

3) Desirable Exposure

It's essential to set Custom White Balance after measuring the desirable exposure. Otherwise, White Balance may not be correctly set. The easiest way of getting the desirable exposure through Zero WB Filter is either to use auto exposure setting such as "P," "S," or "A" mode or to use "M" mode with a precise exposure meter.

4) How to set custom white balance

Tightly put Zero WB Filter to the end of the camera lens (put it as tightly as possible for a better result). Set the camera to AE mode (aperture priority) and adjust the focus. Then, press the shutter button. Select or save this setting above or the setting for the custom white balance of image. An optimal custom white balance should be chosen against the change of light to obtain the precise color cast.

5) How to use Zero WB Filter

Setting Toward A Source of Light

First, check the light thrown on a subject.

Put Zero WB Filter to the camera lens and set it toward the main source of light shed on a subject.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e63/SLCC/Zerocs/figure_2.jpg

Setting Toward a Subject

Put Zero WB Filter to the camera lens and set it toward a subject.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e63/SLCC/Zerocs/figure_1.jpg

If the background lighting differs from the light shedding on the front of a subject, set the camera toward the light thrown on the front of the subject, not toward the subject for a better color cast balance. IMPORTANT: DO NOT expose the camera to the direct light when Zero WB Filter is not installed. Direct light may damage the camera image sensor.

For the information about the common lighting conditions, please see HELP below.

Artificial Light

- Single Light Source

Set the camera toward a source of light or a subject.

- Flash, Bounce Flash

Adjust and set the camera and flash toward a main light.

It'll be get a different result by height and light position, if you set the camera flash toward to celling (bounce flash).

- Combined Lighting (more than 2 light sources)

In the outside where multi light sources exist, set the camera lens toward a subject or the general direction of light. In a space in which a variety of bright lights exist, set the camera toward a main light source (a brighter light source) for a better result.

Natural Light

- Sunlight

Set the camera toward the sunlight. However, Zero WB Filter should be installed in advance.

- Sunrise & Sunset

If the camera faces the sun at sunrise or sunset, the warmth will be neutralized. If the camera is set toward the side or the opposite of the sun, a better result can be obtained.

- Outdoor Shade

Set the camera toward a subject. In case lighting exists, have it behind.

- Cloud

Set the camera toward a subject. In case lighting exists, have it behind.

6) Insufficient Color Saturation

Zero WB Filter adjusts the color white balance sensor to obtain optimum color balance. The white balance can not be accurately adjusted unless sufficient red, green, and blue colors are shed on a subject.

In most digital cameras, the optimum white balance can be set when the light source is within 2800k - 9500k. In case the light source is off from the range, the white balance can not be set or 'ERROR' message will appear.

7) Use Other Filters

Zero WB Filter can be installed on the other camera lens filter such as skylight filter or polarizing filter. However, an independent and accurate color balance may not be obtained due to the former filter.

8) Simple Digital Exposure Meter Function

Zero WB Filter is allowed to use a simple digital incident-light meter as follows:

1) Even though a user is not beside a subject, under the same lighting condition with the subject, set the camera to [Manual Exposure Mode] and put Zero WB Filter on the front of the camera lens.

2) Then, set the camera and Zero WB Filter toward the opposite of the photographing direction.

3) Switch on the camera and adjust the aperture and shutter speed until the camera exposure meter displays a desirable exposure condition.

4) Remove Zero WB Filter and return to the photographing position and take a picture.

9) Digital Video Camera

Zero WB Filter becomes an excellent white balance tool with digital video camera. Put Zero WB Filter and face the camera toward the background or light source. Then, press [Custom WB] button in digital video camera. Adjust the custom white balance against the change of lighting.

10) Troubleshooting

- Low-Lighting and Off-Range

Under the improper lighting, the camera may deny custom WB setting, or cause an undesirable result due to the denial. In order to obtain a good result under the low-lighting condition, therefore, the exposure needs to be increased one stop or two stops. This increase is to allow the user's setting WB only, not to compensate the exposure. Before taking a picture, the desirable exposure must be reset.

- Color Cast

As a professional tool, Zero WB Filter produces a good result if properly used. In case improperly used, unwanted color cast could occur. Read the manual and set an optimum custom WB to obtain a satisfiable result. Due to the color setting or monitor calibration, unwanted color cast could occur.

- Combined Light

In case second light source comes with the initial main light source, unacceptable color cast could occur.

NOTICE: While obtaining the average balance from more than 2 light sources, the color temperature can not be adjusted at the same time. Under the spreading combined light condition, set the camera toward the multi-light source direction. If the direction of camera is adjusted to take a certain amount of light source under the combined light environment, the result may change. The white balance is also allowed against either the selected light source or main light source.

If the white flash has caused color cast due to warm light, the flash can be balanced with the main ambient light, using flash / fill light gel. For example, either use a color conversion filter which exceeds the flash to make it accord with incandescent light or fluorescent light.

11) Warranty Policy

a. It's warranted for ONE year from the date of purchase against manufacturer defects.

b. No in-warranty service will be available even during the warranty period under any of the following cases:

- Product damage or breakdown due to a user's improper handling or incorrect use
- Product damage or breakdown due to an unauthorized remodelling or disassembly
- Product breakdown due to natural disaster such as fire, earthquake, flood, or lightning
- Product damage or breakdown due to improper maintenance such as drop, impact, pressure, dust, sand, or flood
- Product damage or breakdown due to careless management
(ex: keeping the product in a hot and humid or very cold place)

- Product damage or breakdown due to the cases similar to the above

c. The accessories (box, necklace string) are not warranted.

Hi everyone , just my 2 cents here .

White Caps & WB Filters are 2 different thing . I may not say much about this 2 items but , i actually have them both . Got the White Cap , cheap & its everywhere can get , results to me = 60-70% correct . WB Filters = above 90% correct .

And its an idiot proof thing to me that i will carry it around with me a lot . Because i do not know anything about adjusting WB  .

Here are a few samples . Sony A700 + Minolta 28-70mm f2.8 . Exif info still attached .
